It appears that many members yearn for a private forum. However, you will loose the spontaneous entertainment and fun that is the essence of a public forum.

Half the post these days are spambots, personal attacks, and racial slurs. Something could be said about moderating a wee bit to clean up the types of posts we see here.

I don't care if people post silly shite or use foul language, but it is annoying to see spambots and trolls posting in every forum and making up about 1/3 of all new posts.

Also, per some of the posts above, the lack of caring is further felt when users see things like the clock out of sync by 37 minutes. I mean, seriously, if no one ever cares enough to sync the clock on the server or delete the spambot posts how can ye expect them to remain civil? Users get the feeling its total anarchy, the wild west of forums, and then feel free to attack each other.

That being said I am against a right-wing crack down like we had before (by actual non-goth right wing pro bush supporters might I add), but I think there is a nice middle ground which could accommodate both sides of the argument.

I think that occasional moderation could likely help things significantly. I see a lot of threads made as responses to an insult from other threads, which produces a bunch of garbage we all end up sifting through. If a moderator was around to shut down or lock the petty and utterly pointless threads that get created on a near daily basis then that would surely cut back on all of the excess bullshit that comes with it.

I haven't been around these forums very long so I can't relate to any past occurrences when mods came around and cleaned stuff up, but it does sound pretty shitty. If light moderation took place on the forums, I doubt things would ever get so bad that the Moderators have to decide to suddenly crack down.

From my experience there is no such thing as occasional moderation. It's a round the clock job. The admin/mod members should be assigned specific boards and keep them clean. It's simple, if someone isn't doing their job, find someone who will. Now, it helps when people holding these positions aren't scared to lay down to law.

it is honestly kind of difficult to sort out just who is more WAY out of line in a lot of these exchanges. A lot of times we don't feel like deleting bot posts if they have amusing responses, but then people cry about a bot post being on the boards. I feel bad deleting people' text, but once you mix it up, it's much harder to clean up.

But, I also understand that different people have different opinions on level of oversight and you can't please all the people all the time.

Oh, I agree with your point 100%, but I feel actions speak louder than words. There have been a lot of positive changes that have been in the works behind the scenes for this site, some of which unfortunately turned out to be spectacular failures, both in expense and implementation, but you are correct. Gnet should be more entertaining.
