Actually, if he acts for a living, he is an actor. Plain and simple. One doesn't have to act on TV, in film, or have national or international fame to be an actor. People can make a living off of the theatrical variety of acting. I know this because my own cousin makes a living off of it. Doesn't always pay a lot, and you have to audition for each new part, but you can make a living. It's also how a lot of the "big names" in acting got started.
Additionally, most people go in to work either indifferent to or hating their jobs. Therefore, it is a great achievement for someone to be able to do something he loves and survive off of it. I know someone who worked for years at one of those computer jobs you mentioned, looking forward to that vacation he could afford because he was miserable for the other 230 days of the year. And somehow, "thrown out of a Hilton Hotel on a coke binge with a group of fucked up rich indie girls" doesn't ring of the "high life" unless you're referring to your mental state on coke.
