How much better/worse are water based dyes for your hair (the kind that only last about two weeks) relative to normal dyes?

Now, I'm just speculating 'cause I really have no idea, buuut...I should think that they'd be less harmful than the permanents. I think that the temporary dyes only leave a sort of color residue on the outside of your hair shaft, as opposed to permanents which actually invade the shaft?

I'm pulling this all out of my ass.

Manic Panic is actually conditioning. I'm really paranoid about what I put in my hair and things that might damage it, but Manic Panic is great.

Permanent hair dyes contain things (ammonia and the like) that allow the dye to penetrate your hair, while temporary hair dyes just coat it, so I'm assuming that water based would be better.

I called it temporary dyes.

The one I'm using will be wiped off within one hair wash.

But there're some kind of dyes that is last longer than 8-10 washes.

they are much better. one of the reasons my hair is so dry and I have so much breakage is because of overusing permanent dyes.

Because my hair used to be SUPER long, and is still quite long, I have to be careful.
I had my first haircut in 7 years over the summer, so before that, those 7-yr-old ends needed to be kept safe. Manic Panic was kind to them.

Water or vegetable based dyes are better for your hair, but they don't give the results that other dyes give.

Okay so one of my roomates wants to try out some crazy looks and one of the things that she wants to try is vibrently colored hair (she specifically mentioned blue, purple, and/or red) but she is kind of terrified to do anything that has even the slightest lasting effect so the color would need to wash out (I talked with her and she seemed okay with it taking a week or two to wash out so ost temp dyes would be okey) and no bleaching first. My question to you all is what brands seem to have the best temp dyes? If it helps she has completely virgin hair and it is kind of a dirty blond. I remember really likeing the one by Manic Panic that I used last year but that was a demi perm and I don't know if their temps are as good.

I would not recommend using henna to dye your hair. A hippie friend I used to have used it. It is very long lasting, you'll have to grow it out. Which might sound like a good thing, but the colour fades in a real ugly way. The black is never that nice to begin with, it has green undertones which become more prominent over time, and the red turns brown.

And I'm not sure it's actually good for your hair even though it is all natural, that hippie chick always had really frizzy hair.

My boyfriend moaned about my hair today. I dyed it all jet black well over a year ago, and never re-did it. I just dyed the roots red as my hair grew. So now my hair is mousey roots, then red then black. It needs to be redone, and I'm not sure what to do with it. I might just get my mate to buy a dye and let her loose.

You might have something there. I already get strange looks taking my kids to school, may aswell give them something to look at! But my head is an ugly shape, so maybe not......

meh just keep the sides a little fuzzy (kind of like Cicero's which you can see over in the hawk thread) which helps hide imperfections and gives a bit of a softer look than shaved sides
