Vinyl and what it can take.

I have a pair of vinyl jeans. Actually, I have few pair. But there's this one pair I have just sitting here and I was wondering; What would happen if I put slashes in the vinyl around the legs?

The reason I would do such a destructive thing to a pair of jeans is because I've grown fond of wearing tights and layers of fishnets over the tights.

Now, I have a pair of regular pinstripe black denim skinny jeans that I put holes and slashes in so that the contrasting tights and fishnets would show better. Yes, sometimes I'm very much into a look than functionality. But those pants were missing the button that closed them, so they were on their way out anyway. When I roll the legs up to look like slashed up cargo pants, the tights look bloody grand.

So I was wondering, pvc and vinyl. Can it handle this kind of torment? Also, I find vinyl to be rather uncomfortable to begin with and figured a few slashes in the legs would give the vinyl a bit more give and ease of movement as well as breath better.

Also, it's spring and I'm going to have to start thinking about a Summer wardrobe. Stuff that breathes, but shows off my figure while not exposing my skin to the sun so much.

What do you guys think? Would slashed up vinyl pants be a bad thing?

I don't see why, but you might want to place a row of stitching (widely spaced, of course) perpendicular to the end of each slit so the tear doesn't continue easily. hell, you might want to put the row of stitching all the way around, kind of like a giant button hole. That might interfere with the kind of look you are going for, I don't know. I guess it all depends on how sturdy or thick the particular fabric is.

I say go for it! We demand pics of the finished product though.

I would have to second emeraldlonewoulf with the button hole idea. The danger in slashing vinyl is not in the fact that the fabric around the slash would unravel (infact, vinyl is one of those fabrics that do not ravel), it is that the slash might grow if you apply stress to the area. I usually stay clear of non-breathable fabrics (it's cotton, linen, and wool for me) so this isn't my area of expertise. But from what I gather, if you approach the slash like one big button hole, you'd get the result you want (I am basing this off of PVC trenchcoats that fasten with button holes, so I'm sure the results would be similar. I'm just not quite sure how the enlarged area of the slash would affect the button hole stitching).

Also there are PVC repairs kits just in case... So go for it!

Best Regards,
Neil

Well, I wouldn't do it for the same reasons the others have mentioned. Vinyl just isn't going to react to a rip in the same manner an "organic" weaved fabric would, and would more than likely end up looking less than stellar. If you have something made of vinyl that your not in love with anymore I'd test it on that first. The whole thing might just be a learning experience that you can apply to vinyl in the future.

Well, I did it. I put the holes in the jeans and they fit a bit looser and a bit more comfy.

I took everyone's advice and added white thread stitching around the holes.

I decided to go with very big holes instead of slits for the most part.

I'm really wanting to mod the shit out of these pants now that the holes are there.

I might add a knee or thigh flap with one of my more fav bands on it. Maybe.

If not, I'm going to use dental floss to stitch some very predominant looking stitching along the legs and such.

Well, I ran out of white thread, so I need more to reinforce the ends of the slashes and stitching in general. I'm thinking on using dental floss overall. It's thicker and stronger than regular thread.

I will, shortly, be doing a somewhat photoshoot with Dark Echo again soon. I'll be wearing them.

The dental floss thing is kinda punky, but the color choices with embroidery floss (and the ability to combine threads of different colors) allow for a lot of creativity. We look forward to seeing your photo shoot.

I use fishing line for things like that. We used to live on a lake and I have tons of it in my closet. I use my dental floss for my teeth.
I can't wait for you to get pictures.

I didn't want to start a new thread when there was already something similiar. So, I found a pair of vinyl pants. They were too big in the legs. I took them in and hemmed them up, and they look *stunning* in my opinion, because I adore vinyl. BUT, when I walk. They squeak.

Is there any way to stop this?!

I forgot why I asked that, but it had something to do with squeaking.

I love my vinyl pants. I want to taper them to my leg size. Should I just use my machine and standard thread?

That's what I did to hem mine and it didn't work well. It kept leaving gaps of no thread on the inside. I don't know if it was the thread or the needle I was using that messed it up though. I think you're supposed to use special thread and a stretch needle.
