Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Doom Metal.
I really do think that it is one of the best sounding metal genres.
What do you guys think of it?

Meh. I've heard a lot of the early stuff that later came to be known as 'Doom Metal'. I like Black Sabbath and Pentagram.
I prefer plain old 'Heavy Metal' to any Metal subgenre, however.

I love Doom. Stoner, Sludge, Funeral, Symphonic.... The slower, more depressing and hopeless, the better.

I occasionally listen to Blackened Ambient for a similar effect.

Oh man. This is by far my favorite genre. Doom, sludge, and stoner are where it's at.
IN FACT, I'm listening to my doom station on Pandora right now.
Fuckers.

I'm a fan of Doom with clean vocals. Abysmal Grief and Isole are a couple I recently got into. I'm also a big Empyrium fan. Any other suggestions?

Not much a fan of the clean stuff, but try Paradise Lost, Anathema and Katatonia if you haven't (which you should have already).

Ufomammut is loads better than Electric Wizard if you're gonna listen to stoner, though Wizard is good. Also, Acid King rules.

I'll take "bands that desperately want to be Paradise Lost" for 1000 Trebeck.

Anathema sounds pretty solid. Though Paradise Lost and Katatonia don't really have that epic sound I'm looking for.

Candlemass are good. Saturnus -clean with extreme vocals and hell of depressing lyrics-.

Acid Bath is pretty much a combination of doom, sludge and stoner metal, aaand they're just about the best band. Ever.
Sleep, Acid King and Electric Wizard are my favorites for doom/stoner, and Eyehategod tops it off for sludge.

Doom is where it's at brah.
For straightforward DOOOOOM, I would say 'Orthodox', who are actually not straightforward at all since their first album, 'Gran Poder' is one of the most crushing musical experiences that you can imagine and 'Emanecer a Puerta Oscura' dabbles in free jazz to mix it up with the doom elements, it's fascinating.
With drone metal, either Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine or Bonedust, though Sunn O))) and Earth are good beginner choices.
Funeral doom, I'd recommend Ahab, Wormphlegm and Thergothon to get you started, but there are plenty of great bands.
Sludge metal, definitely Omega Massif, who are simply immense.
Stoner metal, Bongzilla, Sleep, Cuda, Weedeater.

Just listen to every recording Stephen O'Malley ever participated in the making of. If there's a God of doom metal, it's Stephen O'Malley without a doubt. Sunn O))), Khanate, Lotus Eaters, Burning Witch, KTL, Thorr's Hammer, Teeth of Lions, fucking list goes on and on. Seriously, you'll thank me later.

Throes of Dawn is ok I guess, but they're not doom metal.
