Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL.

Songs about Arson

So I've noticed three songs, all written by London-based goth rock bands around 1981, concern fire and burning and arson. These are Dieche, by the Sex Gang Children, The Lady is for Burning, by Ausgang, and Last in the House of Flames, by UK Decay.

I have a sneaking suspicion that they were all about the same event. Andi Sexgang wrote that Dieche was about his hairdresser's friend who was on the run for arson and murder. The New Cross fire, which was set in London on January 18th, 1981 is a possible candidate for the subject/inspiration for the songs, but that remains unsolved, and if Andi Sexgang's hairdresser has been keeping the dreadful secret all these years then my name is Wilhelmina.

Yes, yes, very droll, but the mystery remains. Did a single arsonist grant a magnificent boon to us all by inspiring these songs?

There's also "Fire" by 13th Chime, a lesser-known deathrock band around that same time.

Ha. I was also going to suggest that one.
