| Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Trying to explore goth music
Hello!
I am new to this forum and am hoping that one or several of you can help me out.
I wouldn't consider myself a goth, but I'm a person who likes a wide variety of musical genres and likes to explore. I've been interested in looking into goth music lately, and since I haven't been able to find any particularly good resources for doing so, I wanted to ask where I should start in terms of bands and/or specific albums, and possibly where I should go once I've started.
To explain where I'm at, I have listened to and enjoy bands like Joy Division, Disintegration-era The Cure, Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and the Banshees...I guess some of the very early stuff. I know a few darkwave bands (Provision, Faith Assembly), and a few symphonic metal bands (Epica, Leaves' Eyes, Nightwish), although I know that neither of those are really goth. Beyond that...it's pretty new to me.
Thanks very much in advance!

In a more experimental direction there's stuff like the Vanishing, Sixteens and Subtonix.
And I'm only mentioning those because all the other bands I'd recommend have already been listed. Except for Eat Your Makeup and Neva. And coldwave like Opera de Nuit and Trisomie 21.

Thanks very much everyone for your help!
I didn't have much time today -- my last.fm only works at work, because we have satellite internet at home -- but I started by listening to the Chameleons, who seem like a band I could certainly get into.
I was also pleasantly surprised by a few of the names on the list. I'm a HUGE fan of both The Church and Strawberry Switchblade, and I always liked Einsturzende Neubauten. So I guess maybe I'm a little farther along than I thought
I'll be making my way through the rest of the list!

Send me your address and I'll send you one of my CDs. Better to have it in the hands of someone exploring Goth music than gathering dust in my garage.

Lolly and Rozz mentioned the Japanese bands Sadie Sads and Phadia. Sadie Sads are pretty industrial/no wave sounding (very noisy in other words), you might not be into that thing.
I would also recommend the bands G-Schmitt and Madame Edwarda, on the Japanese front. I put a few CD's on Mediafire/Rapidshare, I'll track down the links and post them if you're interested.

Pink Turns Blue
Leitmotiv
Chants of Maldoror
Miguel and the living dead
The Knutz
The March Violets
Zadera
Radio Scarlet
Red Wedding (Not Goth, but was very incestuous with that scene in the 80s. More of a broadway meets post punk thing. But an honorable mention no less.)
...Yeah. That should cover a few more that haven't been mentioned.

She said goth, not metal. Please refrain to answer to this post under penalty of ridicule.
