Partly, but I didn't misunderstand what she's doing.

You never heard that line before, JCC? I hear it every single time someone eats some mock meat I prepared without even asking me if its meat or not. I don't "trick" people, meaning I don't say its meat and then say "surprise! It was seitan!"

Though you can get vegetarian (not vegan, at least not the brands I know of) "chicken" nuggets that, after a friend had tried them, got other people to try it without telling them what it was, and no one could tell the difference, it was really creepy how they tasted JUST like chicken nuggets.

Still, I recommend just showing that meat or any substitutes do not have to be in a meal at all, like Joker said they can get expensive anyway, I'd say buy a bag of vital wheat gluten and make your own mock meats if necessary and leave the soy alone, being vegan is actually pretty cheap the more whole foods you rely on rather than premade processed crap.

Then why do you have any problem with it?

Here's an awesome suggestion:

How about you make these dishes as you would and tell your family what's in them and let them decide if they like them or not.

What's with the whole, "I must trick them into being vegan." bullshit you're pulling? I don't understand unless your family doesn't want to be vegan and somehow you feel righteous enough to lie about shit just to get them to bend to your ideals.

I'm not actually tricking them and none of them have any wish to become vegan. They know I'm vegan, they know I'm cooking vegan. I want them to see that they just because it isn't filled with meat that it tastes like crap and the best possible way I can do that is to make food as close as possible to the real thing so they see that infact I'm not trying to poison them or force them to eat something they'll hate. So they can see that it is made of healthy things without tasting horrible. They will try anything I cook (only once) but I don't want to shove a whole bunch of soy stuff and vegetables at them and they will gross out. I know my family, I want to make it close as possible so they'll possibly be more open minded. Also I'm the only one that cooks in the house. I wanted to see if I can create dishes that we'll all like and be satisfied with so I wouldn't have to cook two separate meals every night.
If that makes sense..

Or, more accurately and concise:
If she says it's vegan, they will have certain expectations and prejudices to it. That's hardly the way to go to let people judge your tasty food.

There's actually been studies done that people will rate soy products as poor tasting regardless if they are actually soy or not, they did an experiment where people would taste "soy" sausage and beef sausage, and while some where properly labeled others were not, regardless if it was really soy or just labeled soy it was rated poorly, and would rate the sausage labeled as beef highly regardless if it was beef or soy. I heard about this on Vegan Freak Radio Ep. 99, I think its in the same episode they mention that a lot of older people don't like soy because.....SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!!

To be honest, my response would have mirrored Ophelia's. The title is very misleading. Whether I'd gotten 'it' is debatable. Probably not.

True the title is misleading but actually reading the thread reveals that it isn't quite her intention.

I'd probably have skim read it at best. Fortuitously, I saw the Ophelia and Jcc exchanges, or I'd have said what Ophelia said. Maybe I'm biased because I've strongly disliked every single vegan I've ever met.

Ha, I guess I'm not the only that skim reads posts on this forum. I'll clarify. I've strongly disliked every single vegan I've ever physically met.

I love vegan food. Particularly if I can have it with Lamb Kabobs.

I'm not British.

People I talk to online are in my mind genderless, and faceless. Just random citizens of this beautiful planet. Pixels that will amuse/entertain me.

Despanan; hahahaha.

I know you're not, but its true. And if we're faceless, why latch on to the fact she's vegan and not read the thread and immediately assume the worst?

Because I am biased, and unfortunately, that sometimes bleeds into my comments online. No one is perfect. At least, not me.

Nobody's perfect, but that does not mean that you shouldn't at least try not to be a biased douche just because others don't like you, doesn't it? :P

This whole conversation could easily have been circumvented. So, I'll change my response to;

Yes, I don't like you.

Problem solved.

Dice the onions and sautee in oil. Drain beans and mash. Add onions, crumbled bread, chili powder, and seasoning salt to beans and mix together. Add flour by tablespoons and mix after each addition to produce a thick bean mixture. Form into six patties abou 1/2 an inch thick. Cook on stove in small amounts of oil, turning when necessary until somewhat firm and brown.

Black beans look disgusting when they first come out of the can, and when you mash them the mixture is purple, but when you're done it'll look nice and brown. So...don't make it in front of anyone XD
I made these tonight. My mom loved them and asked me for the recipe. ^_^ Thank-you very much for your help, Saya!

I apologize for the misleading title. I meant something different, but I couldn't think of the proper words, at the time.
I didn't mean actually tricking, or forcing my family to eat tofu or vegetables. I just meant how would I go about making dishes acceptable to my family that tasted similar to the real thing.

You don't have to apologize. It's just a bit of harmless poking and prodding. Plus I learnt something new today, which is always cool.

@Learing, great to hear it! I'm very glad she liked them.
