Corsets

Has anyone ever made a corset? I would just like to know how hard the boning is to do. Thank you in advance for any advice on how I can do this.

violet has never made a corset

though she has worn one in les liasons dangereuses

she wonders whether it would not be simpler to find one in a vintage shop
and dye it & add some yellowed lace

(though however it is procured she would greatly aspire
to see darkangel pinioned within one)

I've made a boned top, and it's a pain.

Corsets, I would imagine, are as bad if not worse.

However, if you're feeling masochistic (or a better seamstress than me! ;0) Simplicity do one under the 'historical costume' section.

Finding the steel boning is *fun* - don't forget to file down the corners unless you're into stabbing yourself in the armpit with something sharp.

I will post a picture once I find appropiate material and make the actual corset. And I am not sure if I want to add boning, thats why I wanted to ask if it was hard to do.

And I am not into sticking myself in the armpit with a sharp metal pole, but other things in other places are considered

Their prices on Boning and such are pretty reasonable..

And Yes, you definitely want boning in your Corset.

It provides much of the shape and contour that makes corsets so Sensual.

oh, I'm soo late. the boning I used was this plastic tubing stuff kinda like weed whacker line that I happened to come across at home depot. Hell, it looked good, but I basically just wing it whenever I decide to make something... i have a pair of shell toe adidas that feel apart, and the boning in that was plastic too. they need to make bras with that stuff too, because it seems like it doesn't poke as bad.

I plan to make corset like tops out of a couple of my shirts sometime but if I ever wanted to make a real one, I would use steel boning or at least something a bit stronger then that flimsy plastic boning. Lots of corset acessories on ebay.

I just finished making a pvc corset. That was fun. Never worked with pvc before.

One thing I would say is - choose your size by the *waist* measurement. Then make your pattern a couple of inches smaller overall. And be brave about it. Try not to be tempted to make it up in your actual size - 'cause where's the fun in that?!...

Boning is pretty straightforward. Though of course, I may be doing it completely wrong! When you've joined all the segments together, sew strips of bias binding down the seams on the inside. This gives you pockets for the boning, and there you go - slide it in and you're away. A few stitches at top and bottom to close the 'pockets' (or just hem it) will stop it from sliding out.

[oops] Almost forgot - the plastic boning may be a little flaccid for real constriction, but it's great for starting out. As you get more used to using it and get a bit more adventurous, then steel is obviously the ultimate. But at least a machine needle can (usually) go through the plastic stuff without shattering!

And the Elizabethan Corset page is truly drool-worthy!

You'll need stretchy material! One way to start off is to get a stretchy shirt which is too big and to create a corset like style by taking it in by and inch or so (depending on size) 4 places down the front and 4 down the back. Oh, and down the side seams too. The 10 lines you've sewn will pinch it all in nicely. And if you sew down the material at the back (on either side of your new seam), it'll have a 'boning' type of look but without the stiffness. But keep it tight!
Another possible addition is to sew 5 or 6 eyes or loops of ribbon down the length of two of your back 'seams' and thread lace or ribbon through the loops, criss-crossing. This looks really cute and can be used to pull the top in that extra little bit!

Heh. I just have small boobies. XD They do seem to be propotionate to my body so I'm happy with 'em.

Once you find your correct bra size, see if you can find a 'traceable' multi size pattern. This is one of those really large sheets which has all possible sizes on it, and you're supposed to trace the pattern for your size. So what you do is this:

Decide what size each of your measurements is (bust-waist-hips) and plot those on your sheet of tracing paper. Then just trace the lines loosely, but making sure you hit each of your plotted points.

(Sorry if I'm telling you stuff you already know!)

I had to do that recently for a friend who is a right old mixture of sizes. The corset came out looking gorgeous (if I may say so myself), as did she.

The pattern sheets usually tend to turn up as freebies in women's magazines.

If you can't find any and you're interested, I've got a couple I could photocopy and send on to you. Not sure how we'd manage it, but I'm prepared to give it a try!

Absolutely. I think I said before about making it a couple of sizes smaller for a good squeeeeeeze. Plus lacing up the front may be a good idea so's you have plenty of space to bust out all over.

Or not.

Get the ideal shape for your corset so it fits where you want it to. Decide whether you want it to clinch your waist and pick the perfect material.

The lining is where boning comes in. How far do you want each bone to be apart? For example use purple velvet, let it run simply for say 4 inches then create a bump so a small amount of the material (Just enough to slide your bone through) sticks out slightly. Continue this until your corset is perfect then slide bones in. You might want to glue the tops and bottoms of the bones or make your bones shorter than the material then fold your material up and sew it into place to avoid having bones slide out when you wear it.
