Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

What makes a musician.
Dedication, patience... it might help to not have expensive taste in things, because it'll be a while before you make it.

Also... well, this could make and break a musician, an alter ego could make your show more interesting. You'll get more people coming to your shows, meaning more cash for food and other important things.

Always good to be willing to try new things, introducing new sounds in your live performances and recordings. Like instead of using a bongo drum for different percussion, why not use a little chunk of steel, and shoot rocks at it with a sling shot fill a bass drum with Hacky sacks and hit it with Dasani water bottles filled with BB gun pellets.

It takes passion, which goes into dedication. If you don't have the passion for it, where could you get dedication?

The ability to use expression through sound.
I am a bedroom musician, I sometimes think of joining up with someone else. I play piano and flute.

My dad is a musician. He plays double bass in the local symphony and a few jazz bands [or did until recent injuries made it more difficult for him].
It takes a -lot- of dedication, but if it makes you happy, go for it! ^_^ What kind of instrument do you want to learn to play?

I have a lot of dedication, but I want to be more than just a musician. I want to be a novelist, an actor, an artist and a couple of other things, as well.

That's cool. I think that's called being a "Renaissance man".

I think you'd have to do more than that to be able to call yourself that.

To be a musician, one must be able to interpret sounds as art.
I play bass, and consider myself a musician. I can't currently read music, but I am versatile, play by ear, and know a lot of music theory.

It takes only two things to be a musician: Ideas and Motivation.

A musician is a person passionate about making music, even if they suck, and even if their only reasons are for fame and money!

If their only reasons are fame or money, then music is not one reason, and therefore they're not musicians.

I don't know if I agree. A musician is essentially a person who creates music. I'm not sure the reason matters.

I think its the ability to turn noises into art.
I've played bass for going on 8 years, guitar for 7, synths for about 3. I played saxophone and bells for a little bit in 6'th grade band. I also do electronic music, record production, etc. But, I don't know how to read music, and I don't really know a ton of music theory, but I don't think you have to know it. It helps though.

At this point I think we must make a distinction between a musician and a professional musician.
Primitive tribes make music without being able to read or write one lick of a treble clef or get paid to perform. They are still musicians.
I think what Mir is referring to is a professional musician, getting paid royalties and begin paid to perform for large audiences.
