Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

What's the state of your state's scene?
I was kinda interested in what the music scenes are like right now of different states in the USA from the view of those that are a part of their states scene. I'm mainly interested in how much of a goth rock scene there is, but any music scene in general would also be interesting. As well as what kinda bands are prominent in your state. Also if you could name some good bands from your scene that you'd recommend to check out, that would be cool too.
I can say that here in NC, especially in Greensboro where I'm from there isn't much of a music scene at all. I can't think of one goth rock band in the whole state, and I can probably count on my fingers the amount of good bands in the state. (good to me atleast)
As far as shows go here in Greensboro, I've only been to a hand full of shows where a venue was packed, not many people come out to shows around here, and the ones that do are typically just the friends of the bands that's playing. Outside of Greensboro it seems to be a little bit better in that regard, but its still not a huge amount of people that come out. From my experience people around here don't really have a huge interest for any live entertainment or other art forms.
The typical styles of music I hear when I go out are pretty much screamo or some form of metal with alot of gurrr. (I hate screamo!)
Also as far as "goth nights" are concerned I think we have only one in the state. I can't remember the name of it, but I think its in Raleigh (the capital) (2 hours too far from me)
If anyone else here is from NC, I would love to know about some interesting regular events going on in the state that I might not know about, preferably in or near Greensboro.
Here is my list of bands I'd say might be of interest to check out from NC
Anders Manga http://www.myspace.com/andersmanga
Streifte Geist http://www.myspace.com/streiftegeist
F1lth On D3mand http://www.myspace.com/filthondemand
Angels on Acid http://www.myspace.com/angelsonacid666
The Body Bags http://www.myspace.com/bodybagsmusic
Ali$e-D Millionaires http://www.myspace.com/alisedmillionaire
Mr. Fancy Pants Vs. The Satanic Mechanix http://www.myspace.com/mrfancypantslives <---Not around anymore, but they were awesome
Astrid Haven and the Shock Pop Allstars http://www.myspace.com/astridhaven
The Graveyard Boulevard http://www.myspace.com/thegraveyardboulevardband
Nightmare Sonata http://www.myspace.com/nightmaresonata
The Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13 http://www.myspace.com/officialfdq <---also not around anymore, but ruled much ass!
Fractured Fairytales http://www.myspace.com/fracturedfairytales
The Hellblinki Sextet http://www.myspace.com/hellblinki
Taradactyl http://www.myspace.com/taradactyl
I just noticed I could name more good NC bands than I could count on my fingers, but not by much. I could count them if I include my toes. None of these bands are from Greensboro.

I don't know much of anything about the scene here in the Boro. I go to the bar, get tipsy or drunk, then come home and listen to darkwave or minimal wave alone.
There goes my scene, lol.

I will agree with creepy locks. there is not much a scene here in charlotte anymore. I used to love to go see filth on demand when they performed at purgatory, but that was only a few times and purgatory is now defunct. which is so disappointing because purgatory was the most amazing event EVER. End of discussion.

^ don't be so sad, I only got to go about 8 times (every two months) after I turned 18 because you had to be of age to get in. It was great, but 7 years is a long time to do something that big with all the planning it required so I understand why they stopped.

There's not a scene here where I'm from here in Kentucky. Although the Louisville, KY and Nashville, TN scenes have been quite nice. I'm moving to Cincinnati in about a week or so. I have no idea what it's like up there...

I never got to go to purgatory. I wanted to, but every time I was gonna go my ride would bail the day of. There was Nihilism here in Greensboro a few years back, I got to go to that once, but I didn't find out about it until the like the last time they had it. It was pretty cool, I can't remember the DJ they had, but Angels on Acid played around midnight. I think there was some news coverage at the show if I'm remembering right. I'm wanting to start setting up some shows around here myself in the near future. I've been talking to some people and looking into what all it entails in doing so. Greensboro and all of NC really does needs more good shows, and regular events, nights etc. If anyone around here wants to help out, let me know.

Hmh. Down here in South Florida things are kind of in the middle. Where I'm at, (ft. Lauderdale) you pretty much just gotta find the right venues and places and we'll definetly be out there, but in the broad daylight there's pretty much nothing. I guess the same applies to Miami/South Beach area though it's a lot more interesting.
CreepyLocks: So being a former NC native, I'm guessing the Chapel Hill/Raleigh scene isn't what it used to be? Damn.

I don't do the goth scene anymore...so I dunno.
I'm pretty into indie music and the "hipster" shit...but it's really by accident.
Philly has a pretty awesome local music scene. The problem is, a lot of bands are now weird for the sake of being weird. Trendy weird, I like to say.
It get's pretty annoying and idiotic.

The scene here is mostly uninspiring, with occasional moments of brilliance (such as the clubs Midnight Calling and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).

in my state everyone is a mainstreamer basically, they all listen to rap/hip hop/pop and stuff like that. there are some people who listen to normal metal bands like slipknot/bullet for my valentine/three days grace and bands like that.
those bands are good and all but i like goth metal and industrial/cyber music.

They ae not good, and they certainly are more mainstream than hip hop.

There are a couple of good venues in my immediate area, a club called The Wave being my favorite, even though they only have one goth night a week, there are also a good number of fun things to do up in DC and Baltimore, which I still get to enjoy from time to time as I grew up in that area and still have many friends who live in that area. As for the rest of the state I really don't have a clue.

I think California has an okay scene. I'm in the SF Bay Area, so it's pretty good. I'm in Berkeley, and the high school Goth scene isn't really Goth at all. It's stoners that wear black (nothing against stoners) that listen to rap and hip hop and shop at Hot Topic and cut the tags off to pretend they got it a thrift store. They don't know the literature, the music, etc. Whatever, I just choose not to associate. Yeah, yeah, sounds elitist, whatevs.
Ayways.
San Francisco has a nice Goth scene. The baby bats that aren't babybats were somehow able to find each other. We go to some of the all-ages club days, go shopping, that sorta thing.
Read Gloomcookie, that's our scene.

Ah West Virginia, if you're asking for a goth scene near where I live, you have no hope, but there are enough metal addicts to get by. If you want, check out of of the local bands, Mortal Wrath, here is their link. http://www.myspace.com/mortalwrath

I'm sure that the L.A. Deathrock scene could be considered to be in a much better condition than that.

Well, I've heard that there's a good scene in Birmingham [Alabama], but I've never connected with it; I think it mostly deals with the fetish aspect of Goth, which isn't really my thing.

I'm pretty fortunate here in N FL. I'm within 45 min of the UF campus, and they have a small but earnest club (Heart of Darkness) that hosts one night a week (Ascension) either at the Attic or in other near-campus venues. Their DJs play a lot of old school goth, darkwave, light industrial, and alternative 80s. Well-stocked bar.
I usually attend Factory on Saturday nights in the Edge 17 building in Jacksonville, though. Much bigger place, two dance floors, live bands. Great bartenders and a more varied crowd (well, within the parameters of gothiness). Good mix of classic goth bands and modern synthpop. The one drawback is that there will usually be a few tourists in during the night, and sometimes they don't want to go away. But even that's not so bad.
Anything further away, like the Castle in Ybor or Independence Bar in Orlando is a serious drive for us. We only do that under special circumstances and then make a weekend of it.
So, maybe not the greatest scene action in the country, but it could be a great deal worse.
