Good band names are always taken!
I thought that Ego Death would make a great band name, but some one man band from Greece already took it. I then looked up the latin translation: Ego Nex. If I'm lucky "Ego Death" hasn't signed with a record lable yet, thus the name may be usable.
Fun fact: Did you know that there are two bands named NIRVANA, one from the U.S. and one from the U.K.?

If you know a band name is taken, even if they're not signed, I wouldn't suggest using it. If for anything, if your band gets big people might google you and it will get confusing if you're mixed up with the other band.
I don't think I've ever had a problem coming up with band names. It's just a matter of being a little more creative and not too cliche.

I wrote down a list of 80 potential band names once, and only two of them we're mildly acceptable to my other band mates.

I can relate to that, my friends and I want to make a death-metal/black-metal band with a slightly gothic touch to it and we thought of the name 'Shadows of Society'. Turns out there's a band called 'Society of Shadows'. Lol.

Well if you think you have a good band name and search Myspace music and there's thousands of entries with the same name or label... maybe that's a good place to start?
