I went to court today...

I went to court today as a witness in the case where my brother and I were attacked by this guy.
We gave our witness statements and the guy was sentenced to 40 days of jail.
Meanwhile, the guy has started treatment for alchohol abuse, moved home to his parents so they can keep an eye on him, got a spot as a trainee in his father's company and hasn't touched alcohol since the day.
Now he's gonna lose his job and have this in his papers for many years to come.
Now, despite what he did to my brother and I, I cannot help but feel bad for him.
Please take the 5 mintues it takes to reassure me that he deserves it so I can stop feeling guilty <.<

Wait, he attacked you and your brother and you're still here? What happened to 'this is my time'?

He just hit my brother a few times. I didn't get the chance to defend him, he did a pretty fine job himself.

It sounds like he may learn a good lesson, and my evolve into a better individual from it, so don't feel bad, you helped circumstances force him into a u-turn that may have very well improved his life and the the lives of those around him.

You did the right thing.

Well, if he was already taking steps to improve himself then I don't think you did do the right thing. Did you know beforehand?

I am also surprised at this outcome.

Mabey that was the momment this guy realised he needed to change his ways and not just to look better for court . Not doing what you did might have just enabled him to be a loser for a while longer but this may remind him why he shouldnt be the way he was. Facing his sentance is part of his absolution while he may not enjoy it he needs to do it.
You did do the right thing

No, I didn't even know who he was before court, all I knew was his name.
And that was only because his friends yelled it at him.

Even if he knew the guy was trying to improve himself, the guy attacked his brother and should be treated as any attacker would.

It sounds to me like the whole affair is wrapping up well not just for you and for justice, but maybe for the guy as well. You wouldn't have anything to feel guilty about even if his bad choice made things worse for him (it being his crime). You certainly have nothing to feel guilty about with things potentially getting *better* for him. Maybe it's time to put it behind you?
