Black metal actually has some good stuff, while most of the bands are still laughable I gotta say a lot of the Norway groups still come out with some intense shit...Death metal is just a waste of time and to me not even a real genre.

Well I can't give you a "real" answer to that I guess, considering I haven't browsed everything within death metal. But what I have heard all sounds the same, just getting shittier and shittier with each song.
Thrashard: I can't tell you my music's any better either. No one can. I can tell you what I think makes up good music but that'll just get us way off topic.

as far as good death metal check out later works by Venom(technically considered death metal even though they're nwobhm) and Hellhammer, Marduk, and Flittering are really good

They're really one of the few thrash metal bands I like. I tend to not like "straight" thrash, but I do like it if its mixed with another style, such as Skeletonwitch where it's mixed with black metal, or Vader and Toxic Holocaust who mix thrash with death metal.

The friends took out the cassette and showed me it was Slayer, but no matter how many times we rewound or fast-forwarded, whatever I heard was no longer on there. I'm glad my subconscious is nice to me, though.

I seem to find myself enjoy "straight black metal a lot more than straight death metal. Regular or any more extreme form of death metal sounds repetitive, too distorted and uninteresting to me. Can't enjoy it. Melodic death metal on the other hand, sounds more varied to me and I enjoy it a whole lot more. Melodic death sounds epic to me. Regular death metal, to me sounds like its all about anger and rage in the music. I need more substance than that.
But enough about that. This topic is about Slayer AND trash in general, guessing from the comments. I agree with PortraitOfSanity. I also prefer trash mixed with another style than straight trash. Although I haven't heard too much trash, I find what, PortraitOfSanity says to be true from what trash I have heard.
