I don't have a lot of time to fully research the sources which prove it, however I do thoroughly remember my University lecturer delving into the subject when discussing Zionism around the 1948 period. The best I could find is this which mentions the Jewish resistance group Irgun kidnapping and murdering some British Soldiers, which led to the British withdrawal from their commitments to the Zionist movement until pressure from the newly-fled U.N. forced them back into it.

Only a brazenly partisan douchebag would assert one side of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict to be unequivocally in the 'right'. Both governments have conducted themselves shamefully, as have certain members of both civilian populations. Consider, though, how swiftly the people of the United States might be condemned were one allowed only our country's foreign policy as enacted in the last ten years by which to judge. Most Israelis, as well as most Palestinians, do favor a two-state solution. The situation is complicated, and I am not apologizing for Israel, but the humanitarian records of fledging states in hostile territory are rarely spotless-- this country, in my opinion, hasn't forfeited its right to exist.

Actually, that makes sense to me now. I can see why Israel "needs to be" so to speak. But I still don't dig it's government.

Besides, the brits had no right to give away land that wasn't theirs to begin with. You would think they would have learned that, but its sad to see today they still have a problem with seizing things for their 'empire'.

Exactly, Sternn. Historically, there was never any Jewish presence in Israel. There was no massive Jewish presence in the region at the time of the modern state's formation. Zionism is founded entirely on the word of the Torah, which was actually written by a demented Irishman as a goof.

If you were a Native American, and your goal was to establish a peaceful sovereign state in the Dakotas rather than to 'exterminate' half of America, your analogy might hold a little water.

Israel's right to exist isn't worth arguing about. Israel does exist and she isn't going anywhere, the trouble is cohabitation.

I'm of the mind that a one-state solution, however messy and gerrymandered, is the best solution. A two-state solution is always going to be fraught with territory disputes.

I think the story of the laptop shooting (which I cannot find an objective reporting of anywhere on the internet) has grown from a blog entry to mainstream news sources quoting the blog and garnering people's reactions to people debating the rights of Israel and Palestine to exist as nations. All of which has not really provided much insight or wisdom. But it has been a source of humor.
