my impression of china, what i've learned, seen and heard, is that it is a very old country and culture with a society based on respect and hard work. I think the art is beautiful, the porcelain, and I LOVE the food

Shitty totalitarian government backed up by Europe and the US just because they're a profitable place to set up shop, 'cause they're like really cheap over there and work under such good conditions, because we can aford to close down our local industries (cause we have no unemployment here, you know?)
Death penalty... no freedom of speech or press... no political alternatives to the People's "Comunist" Party... treatment of women... overpopulation...
I'd say that if China weren't the world's oldest culture, with a marvellous array of philosophy, gastronomy, spirituality and art, it could go down the drain that I wouldn't give a shit.
But, seen as they have them...
and seen as they're the world's only still standing (potential) global power to counterbalance the US, I guess I'll let them be... although after China is through with the world or the world gets through with China, we'll probably wish the USSR was still around...

There must surely be another China on this planet that I failed to notice 'till now....must be an alternative dimension or something.

I'm talking about the people, the family, the ancestry. Nothing in this world is impressive right now. Everything is in turmoil, but the past is positively amazing. The ethics, the lifestyles in the small villages, farms. Good stuff. The simple life. I don't like getting into the politics or economics of it all because that starts fight.

Someone famous once said:
"[The past] is just a fable the powerful agree on."
Or something like that. You were not there. You do not know.

I am from China. I don't like China. China has its problems...serious
problems. The gap between the rich and the poor is becoming hopelessly wider. And during the process of the so-called "globalization", not a trace of the past can be preserved. Everything is homogeneously commercial.
But all these problems can not make me believe that Europe and US are among the lands of the blissed. I don't know your countries. Perhaps I don't have a right to make judgment on them. But I see the world as an entity. It's not China that is hopeless. What is hopeless is the world...the world populated by human beings who are doomed because of their inherited weaknesses. To divide the globe into different sections and
firmly believe that one part is better than the other is a sign of shallowness.
"Life is a phenomenon but not a novelty, the same frantic steeple chase toward nothing everywhere and man stinks the same stink no matter where in time."
William Faulkner

Ok, let us try and tone down this conversation here.
You say I don't understand China. I lived in Macau when it was still portuguese territory and after it was returned to mainland China.
I have chinese friends from the mainland, from Macau, from Hong Kong and from overseas in Brazil and Ecuador. I lived among chinese people and got to know them a bit.
This is my way to try to show you that I'm not talking because I read some books or saw some films. I lived there and travelled the mailand a bit.
Sure, you can argue that someone can live in a place and never understand anything about it. This isn't the case with me (and if it were, there would be no point of talking about China because you wouldn't admit anyone to say they understand).
With this in mind, let me try and see what else you wrote and see if I can explain a little better.

I know the chinese people are very much against war. I talked very often with my friends about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Afghanistan and Iraq, and I know that evry chinese was rather well informed about it and the general opinion they support overwhelmingly opposes military conflict as a way to resolve the issue.
I know that the Chinese government is doing all it can so that its parner, N.Korea doesn't do something very stupid.
But let's look at other issues: Taiwan.
How often does the chinese army need to stage war games in the China sea to impress and scare the chinese of Taiwan into submission?
The People's Republic of China as always said it will do whatever it takes to reunite ALL of China again. It's really very clear, if you know how to read between the lines.
On another note, congratulations on your 1st successfull spaceflight and your astronaut. I was still living in Macau SAR when he came to visit our city (I say "our" because my culture is also very present and I helped it grow too) and I was very well impressed at the general feeling of acomplishment in every chinese person I saw.

True, many of these very things are happening still a little all over the world.
But they are ALL happening in China RIGHT NOW, and besides, this thread isn't about the rest of the world, is it?
You asked about China and I told you. If you had asked about anything alse, I would have done the same.
And just what the fuck is your problem with chinese living overseas? There are millions of your countrymen working their arses off in foreign nations to help feed, shelter and clothe their families back home in China. They read and watch the chinese news everyday and have opinions about what is going on. And those opinions came from every side.
And they are all valid. That's is what freedom of speech is. It's not calling names to other people when they only expressed an opinion and weren't even rude about it.
So relax, take a deep breath and think before you write next time.
Do you understand?
Good. Thank you

First of all I've got sth to say to Mr.Corpse. I am sorry to disappoint u. Cuz' I
am not an "oversea" Chinese. So that means your curse didn't work on me in a sense. I've been living in China all the time. My city is pretty much close to where Mr Maelstrom are staying if he is still in Macau.( I think he knows it).
I don't understand what you are trying to do here. If what you want is sheer
praise over China's prosperity, I guess you can by all means find enough of
it in government's propaganda. They are very good at it. U called my name simply because I said I don't like this country. But why do you have to be so shallow as not to give a second thought about what people said before you gave in to ur crazy emotion. With all her faults I still love China. U don't love a thing simply because it is good. U love it because it is where you came from, because u feel undetachable from it, both from its good and from its evil. So be sensible and good luck.
