Alan: Racism and other such social problems tend to be more prevalent in smaller communities than bigger ones. There are terribly racist, small communities all over the United States: The North, the Midwest, the South, Texas, New England....
You won't find these problems to be nearly as big of a problem in bigger cities. Me personally, I'd love to visit San Antonio again; it was very very cool. Perhaps hit N'awlins on the way. ^_^

Austin is a great college town and a cultural mecca ... love the music scene there. San Antonio is supposed to be a beautiful tourist destination. Everyone raves about the river walk; I've never been there. I live in Houston and it's about as ethnically diverse as you can get. And the food, good lord, the food!
But most of the state is filled with backwards hicks and prejudiced rednecks. The state legislature is famous for it's brawls. There have been lynchings and hate crime murders in recent history, and there is institutional racism built into the school systems. It's an abhorrent place to race a child. I can't say if Alabama is worse, but it's pretty bad in most parts of this state.
I used to live in a middling size town called Palestine (pronounced Pal-es-teen so you don't confuse it with the middle east.) It had lots of stores and restaurants. I moved to Houston after living there for one year, because the town had one bookstore, but it went out of business. After that, the nearest bookstore was 60 miles away in Tyler.
How can you not be scared of a place that has plenty of places to buy tractors and farm feed and boots and guns, but not one place to buy a book?

I don't hate you. Saying I hate you would be like saying I hate a dog with no legs trying to cross a busy freeway.

Nope the only cactus that I've seen here are those short, stubby, clustery ones. And I saw those near the border around Laredo. All we have where I live are cedar trees.

Well yeah, I was under the impression that Saguaro mainly exist (naturally) in Arizona and New Mexico.
*shudders* They're so creepy... they look like giant people at sunset.

I remember one thing - rule from UN rules of engagment (ROE) some years ago I read it in the internet. So , what is written there that to avoid escalating the situation you should use adequate level of force- means if somebody threatens you with knife and you have gun, just show it to him with readiness to use in case of attacking. But, from another hand, that rule is for UN peacekeepers. real life is much more complicated. But one thing I'sure - you must be alive in any case)

What kontan said, except you can't be better armed either. Or at least not in Canada you can't. If someone punches you so you shiv them, thats not cool.
