I've been given the task of finding a fancy dress costume for the end of the month and the theme is simply 'American'. I have no idea at all what to go as.

I wish to god I'd taken a picture of their faces when the doors opened . It was bloody priceless. I still got in the lift though! They were all laughing and talking to me, and though I don't speak or understand a word of Spanish I'm fairly certain the jist of it was " bloody hell that's a massive hairdo, you're about 20 feet tall "

Mission accomplished.

Only 5 hours of sleep broken here and there by my tossing and turning grandson, who slept between his nana and me, so his mother could celebrate her birthday.

'Tis going to be a loooong day at work, with much coffee.

You could go as a potato, maize, some sort of tobacco product...hmm or a buffalo or ooh, ooh a prairie dog... when Louis and Clark came up on one of those they hardly knew what to think of them.

I'm getting another cat today! My sister's cat is uber stressed out because her new roommates all have cats, and she can't deal with being in the same house as three others. Apparently she's not even cleaning herself, Robyn had to give her a bath today She's used to being around one cat, so maybe she and Lucy will get along. Lucy can be a bully but only to passive cats, when she was with one cat Mercedes was pretty assertive. She's not spayed though, hopefully we can fix that soon.

Suddenly, I thought of a new goal for myself.

In other news, ever wonder what Gnet would look like if it was made in 1996 with geocities? No? Not at all?

So I was just dicking around on Shelfari, and I started reading reviews of Bitten by Kelly Armstrong which I read back in January. I'm absolutely baffled at how many people gave this good reviews. Its not absolutely horrible, its just mindless reading and I didn't like it. Mostly because the main character is super whiny and absolutely psycho, apparently losing your shit at the drop of the hat conveys "girl power" as one reviewer put it. I was pretty gobsmacked by all the praise for her writing. Now I don't care if people enjoyed it or not, like I said its mindless reading and I enjoy a mindless read or movie from time to time, and its not all that awful, but if you're educated enough to read you should know that this is not good writing.

I looked up The Rose Labyrinth seeing how that was a book that floored me by how bad it was, there is no "its just fun, mindless reading" defense, there is no way a person can read that book and know what the fuck is going on, its like My Immortal: The Published Novel, where all the character's clothes are described in minute detail but NEVER the setting, so you never know where the hell they are. Mostly bad reviews, thank god, but I had to look at the profile and books of someone who said it was one of her favourites and it was beautifully written. Mostly a romance novel reader, which I guess I should expect, with over a thousand titles on her shelf, but she has shit like Lord Of The Rings and To Kill A Mockingbird as her favourites. What the hell?

Some of Heavy Red's clothing makes me not only wanna get gussied up and dance all night to Lene Lovich, nearly anything Adam Ant, The Haus and Siouxsie have spat upon and The Bolshoi but also learn to sew. (Even though it's only almost 11am here)

And honeythorn, if you didn't spend the whole evening laughing like Mozart I will be sorely disappointed.

I started it and quit reading fairly quickly. It stunned me to hear my SO say she thought it was a good book.

Yes, ever since the internet allowed everyone to have a semi-professional voice as a critic and getting a novel published became easier than at any other point in history, the bar has been set pretty low. Add in the fact that with the monetary squeeze on respected traditional review sources (magazines and newspapers), they have started a trend of laying off professional reviewers while the public shows less and less inclination to want to pay for quality news or criticism; we should expect a continuing trend toward the dumbing down of public expectations.

But don't mind my sunny disposition ... I'm just in cheery mood because Newsweek is up for sale.

I'm proud of myself. It looks like I have talked the best caterer in the area into not only catering my event but fitting into my budget. They usually have a $65 minimum per person for wedding receptions but I have talked them into making the contract for an "extended cocktail party" instead of a reception since I'm not doing a seated meal. The minimum for that is only $50 oer person but I have been able to get them to include the bar tenders and a cake in that $50 so if our projections are right I'll actually be $500 under budget and not $1000 over.
