I'd say that she was more true Goth than the kids with makeup and Manson shirts at Hot topic - but then my happy five year old is more goth than they are...

It's the true mark of Freak Achievement to be the subject of someone's research paper at least twice a month.
"... a class that finds the true definition of Gothic."
There's a whole class dedicated to the study of "gothic"? Wow! Sign me up! Hopefully lesson number one will be that "gothic" is an adjective and "goth" is a noun, and that adjectives are not used as objects of prepositions.
If you have a genuine interest in goth and can ask relevant bite-size questions, I will be happy to help. But it appears that you have done no background research whatsoever. Hello, Google!?!
I already earned my own degree through my own work and research. I have no intention of doing your work for you, thankyouverymuch. Unless, of course, you're willing to pay. In that case, I can write you a paper on goth that will kick the ass of any other paper in your class.

Just listen to The Cure, Morrissey, and The Smiths and you will know goth.
[edit] And Tears for Fears is the most gothiest goth band ever!

Actually, she probably did google. If you type in "gothic" or "goth" in google, this site comes up as either number 1, or on the first page.

We're number five when someone googles goth and number when someone googles gothic. Isn't it funny how google has become a verb too?

Being Gothic spans so much, from comic relief, style and even personality. Could someone potentially be "Goth" with just having interest in one of these aspects? Also what in these three things have gripped all of you the hardest? In asking I really would like to know what how much knowledge everyone holds in the word, or what interests them to be so indulged in the word?

If you needed if spelled out a different way for you, that's not going to happen.
Goth is much more then anyone who is not goth could understand, no matter how much research you do. The closest one that your three choices comes to is personality.

Well doll... the truth in being "goth" has to do with intellegence, some what with belief, and history. I've read here previously a comment about the silly manson shirt wearing children who buy one cd see one video and are "suddenly" goth. Well I consider a "Goth" a person who tends to stay informed of the world around him, therefore if a subject arises he can not only hold his own but will return witty retorts. A goth has a since of style but knows how to the tone it to the occasion. An obession with black is a plus but not a must. A drepressed state of mind? No... I personally consider that a form of personal weakness, I can understand a throught provoking tortured state of mind... this you can't control as it is a state usually contributed to by others. BUT to fall into a self induced useless state of depression makes little to no angsty sense. Find something to actually be upset about, or get over yourself. As to history, some people have spent their entire lives as black sheep. They felt different from day one and only tend to fall deeper into that as they grow. It's predetermined... but they are not out there to be non-conforming conformists they travel their own path. Long story short, I believe a truth goth to be strong, elegant, slightly disturbed, and never intentionlly angsty.
Sorry if that got slightly preachy, did not mean to offend.

'Normal People' see rain as an end to a drought, where as many goths see it as a potential flood as the ground is too hard to absorb water and ultimatly seek higher ground. Bad bad explanation... oh I feel shame!

Goths are introspective.
Goths tend to prefer things that offend the dull majority of people.
Goths tend to rebel against the status quo.
Goths have accepted the word 'Goth' as a catagory for their tendancies.
Not all Goths are aesthetically gifted.
Not all Goths are artistic.
Not all Goths are introverts, anti-social, or psychopathic.
Not all Goths are drug users.
...etc...
But a Goth will take the time to think and appreciate what the moral majority calls evil, sinister, dark, beastly, scary, etc. To us those things are a part of life and we make them a part of ourselves.
I am a Goth. Since I was born about a decade before the Goth subculture was created I am also referred to as an 'old-school Goth'. In school I was the introverted punk who liked dark clothing, hung out in the back of the classroom, listenned to heavy metal and depressing music, took walks by myself in the woods at night, and just couldn't stand at attention to that damn flag on the wall. I'm still doing that. I'm still rebelling, still spending gastly amounts of time by myself and my other internal selves, seeking new civilizations and boldly going where no sane man would dare to go.
It's just how I'm wired.
