Batons drawn as SF storms seat of power

The group, led by Sinn Fein TD Aengus O Snodaigh, had earlier protested outside Leinster House and then made their way from Kildare Street to Merrion Street.

Pressure on the gates forced them to open and Mr O Snodaigh and about 30 of the protesters rushed inside.

Some of them headed for a military police post where an armed corporal was on duty.

The corporal felt under threat and produced his baton to protect himself before he was supported by a garda motorcyclist, who also drew his retractable baton.

After a stand-off for a couple of minutes, the group was pushed back on to the street as garda reinforcements arrived on the scene.

Nobody was injured in the clashes and there were no arrests. But a garda investigation into the incident is now under way.

After the demonstrators had been escorted back on to Merrion Street, gardai maintained a blue line across the front of Government Buildings until the protest ended.

Among those who took part in the protest were Sinn Fein vice president Mary Lou McDonald and Jim Monaghan, one of the Colombia Three activists.

In Cork, four members of Ogra Shinn Fein occupied the offices of Fianna Fail councillors at the City Hall while they also held a lunchtime protest outside the city's GPO.

Meanwhile, senior gardai are in close liaison with representatives of the ICTU in the lead-up to a massive street protest being organised for the centre of Dublin on Saturday.

The demonstration is expected by some of the organisers to attract at least 80,000 people but the final number could swell further as public anger boils over.

Gardai say they are adopting a low profile for the demonstration but will deploy sufficient personnel to ensure that it is policed properly.

The marchers will gather at Wood Quay and then head to O'Connell Street before staging an hour-long rally outside the GPO. The rally will include a number of speakers and music.

Dunno who else is following us, but things are getting interesting here in Ireland. The economy has collapsed, the government has collapsed, protests are happening almost daily, and some really big protests are planned for the coming weeks with dozens of political parties and groups all coming together for the first time.

Very interesting sure.

Thats just one of many incidents in the past number of days. Saturday looks to be good - SF have organised a protest along with the United Left Alliance and every trade union in the country.

It's sad that only foreign media are reporting the correct numbers. UA/UK media who had vans and cameras everywhere say over 100,000.

The government claims it only counted 50,000.

Abortive riots or not, the Irish people are seriously getting fucked right now. Public services getting slashed like crazy and talk of 20% of tax revenues going to European banks as part of a bailout deal.

It's already happening.

Dec. 7th on budget day every union in the country along with every major group and political party (with the exception of the one in power) are all planning a huge day of strikes nationwide which coincide with a huge protest in the capital.

It will be on a scale like never before seen in this country.

Man, I'd hate to see the EU break up. Remember their old stuff? Back when they were The European Coal and Steel Community? They were rough and hungry and did some REAL governing back then. They had some REAL SOUL (The Treaty of Rome totally PWNS the Treaty of Maastricht IMHO).

Then they got big and they got their Eurozone and suddenly thousands of Britney and Justin wannabie's were all like: "OH yeah, the EU totally ROCKS!" and I'm like, OH YEAH? I was in Brussels when the Merger Treaty was signed Where were you? You didn't crowd in to Steve's dad's minivan and drive 500 miles overnight just to see Herman Van Rompuy sign off on the Copehagen Criteria. You never camped out for three days just to make sure you got tickets to see the European Convention on Human Rights make Abolition of the Death Penalty a criteria for membership. You have no idea what ECHO stands for, do you?

anyway, it would totally suck if Ireland pulled a Yoko and forced the EU to break up. I didn't even want Ireland IN the EU to begin with (It really feels like a hanger-on IMHO) Even though their best years are behind them IMHO they've still got alot of AWESOME governing to do and are WAY better than the UAE no matter what the corporations and the media tell you.

Plus the Four Freedoms are PRETTY good, and almost feel like a continuation of the EEC. Though seriously, FUCK the treaty of Lisbon. They are totally selling out.
