Fashion DIY tips and gratuitous plugs. And hair. Hair! Flow it, show it. Wait...no. That's some hippie musical. Nevermind. |

New to Gothic fashion.
Well, I've always admired the aesthetic from afar, but never thought of applying it to myself, until now. There is a certain elegance in Gothic fashion that you don't see anywhere else. I need a new style, and would like to incorporate elements of Gothic fashion into it. I especially love Victorian clothes...top hats, tailcoats, vests, etc. So I would sort of like to go in that direction. Mostly black, but also some white and gray. I just saw the movie Sweeney Todd for the first time, and there was one costume in particular worn by Johnny Depp which I thought was spectacular:

It's not black, but it still manages to be gloomy while simultaneously elegant. I just don't know where to get clothes like this! Help me out.

Here's what I look like by the way, if it helps. I realize something needs to be done about my hair as well. I've been trying to grow it for years, but had to keep cutting it because I put dye in it once and felt my hair was contaminated...due to my OCD (yes, diagnosed. I'm not one of those people who checks the lock once and says "Oh I'm so OCD!"). Still dealing with that obsession and feel the urge to shave it all off, but trying to resist...Sigh.
Anyway, I am a blank canvas that needs some embellishment.

STEP 1: Tease hair
STEP 2: Leather jacket
STEP 3: Dark eyeshadow applied lightly on bottom lids; smudge well
STEP 4: Stare blankly into mirror. For hours.
STEP 5: Darkness. Turn off lights; play Bauhaus(or your favorite gothy band. However if it not Bauhaus then I will frown somewhat inside).
STEP 5: Light. Sleep with lights on. Regular 60-80 watt bulbs will do the trick--for that restless look!
Hope this helps. You're welcome.
P.S. Oh--and boots. Black, leather boots.

Also, start smoking if you haven't already.
This is mandatory.

Kretek only, mind you. None of this non-cloved crap. Oh yes, you'll also have to start some serious philandering and drug/alcohol abuse (or both, whichever appeals most).
Then you will truly be ready for your training to begin.

Eyeliner. Eyeliner. Eyeliner. Eye shadow. Mascara (maybe). Oh yeah, and eyeliner.
And a slim fitting black button up shirt, or tshirt. Black skinny jeans, and chunky combat boots.
I also think you'd having your hair shaved. Or having it super long
But all those things are just personally what I like
By the way, you have lovely lips. Not trying to creep you out...

Learn to sew. Otherwise you'll be spending a fortune on clothes.

Thrift stores. I found most of my really nice clothes there. besides, they tend to be much cheaper and of a higher quality, if you know what to look for.
Boots do part of the job. Don't buy demonia if you love walking. Or your legs.

Anywhere they sell black and you can afford it. I personally think you should just buy things you like in colours you like and not be afraid to play with aesthetics until you find what you like to look like.

Apply the treatment I described earlier, and you already look goth enough. Man, goth clothes are just the clothes some goth got bored with and did somthing to. Unless you're going for the fishnet and leather...
There's only a handful of places to get a mesh shirt that I know of, outside of the internet. But you could always try one of those "Novelty" shops--by which I mean sex shops. Or there's always Hot Topic--Hah!
That's were I got MY fishnet shirt.

This thread really hurts my feelings to an extent.
Look, guy you've come to the right place but you're not going to get the blessings of those here to go shop at hot topic or to look like a victorian gay Neo from the Matrix.
Honestly, I wouldn't go for the victorian look. It just screams newbie mall goth.
If I were you, I would just enjoy the music for what it is and if there's something within the scene that you want to appropriate, go for it. But jumping in all the way with nothing to ground it, is going to yield some vicious and laughable faux pas.
Then again, I may be the minority in this. I still find it really weird that a goth would rather listen to Type O Negative long before they'd listen to Sisters of Mercy. But I chalk that up with the fact that goths actually like the idea that a dark and morbid outlook on life and lifestyle trumps the music and it's more of an identity than it is just a collection of people who happen to like spooky rock and roll. In short, it seems these days that goths find it more important to look the part than actually enjoying the music.

in my opinion gothic style is roughly based on punk-style and anarchism: so go ahead break a bottle, let's be honest, none of us will never date a model.
hehe.. simply put. follow those tips you like and then do your own thing out of it..
