Has anyone ever told you..
You were too cheerful to be a Goth?
I have some serious issues with this because I don't feel the need to pretend to be depressive yet people have accused me of pretending to be something I'm not because I can smile pleasantly and wish someone a good morning.
In high school I was much more gloomy because I was depressed and because everyone around me was ignorant and trying to get them to be open minded was a lost cause so I kept to myself. Now that I'm in college I'm surrounded by people who are a bit more open minded. Hence I am also more open to being around others. However, many take this attitude of mine and simply say...your not very dark...or your not scary or look like you're going to kill someone...jokingly....ha...ha... 
Does cheerfulness less a Goth of you make?
Do Perky goths ( not the style but attitude) not exist?
Is it the case that one must necessarily always have some kind of a dark and mysterious air or attitude or be antisocial in order to be considered goth
What are your thoughts?

If they can't accept you for who you are, they don't deserve your friendship.
Being "Goth" doesn't mean you have to look or act like a depressed homicidal monster.
It seems to me like your college 'friends' aren't much more open minded than the ignorant high school kids. Let this be your chance to educate your new social network.

Talking about that sort of thing is a bit of a faux pas here, and it gets very old so you're going to have to accept you are going to be met with irritation and sarcasm. Had you utilized the search function to see if anyone had brought it up before, you would know that. The prevailing line of thought is "Who cares?" Sure there are Goths, I suppose, in the sense of people believing they are real, so they must real....
Anyway, it is Perky Goff and they are real. I'm probably a Perky. The trick is when smiling seem ultimately deranged in a way they gives of the impression of being hot-tempered or demented. Then use as a cynical way to prance around inviting people to mess with you so you can justify harming them and then laugh about it.
