I'm past the "my parents don't understand me" stage - for those of us old enough to be finishing college, that level of angst is just pathetic.

In my defense, I did read the rules, along with several of the threads. Not sure this is any worse than whining about youtube commercials.

Personally, I'm in formal logic with a specialty in inductive logic. Just sent off the rough draft of my paper on inference to the best explanation. In practice, that means I have at least some idea of any of philosophy of science, philosophy of religion, and mathematical philosophy, along with reasonable competency in AI research. Philosophy of science being my favorite of the set, although my personal work is more in everyday logical processes.

I've never particularly found any philosophy that's satisfied me entirely. I consider myself an atheist, in that I'm not saying there is absolutely no chance there is no god, but that chance is slim, and no one has ever given me a good reason as to why I should feel or think otherwise. Politically, I align best with socialism, so I suppose that means I fit in here.

I dunno, I figure I could define my philosophy best with some good questions.

Oh but that is such a small part of philosophy. The central questions I work with are "What does it mean for a statement to be justified?", "How do we know what is real and what is our own interpretation?", or "What kind of commonalities do we need between people to be able to communicate?" There really are so many fields though.

Totally agree, Ben. She's clearly not a moron, and I hate seeing potentially interesting people chased away under the proviso that this is some insular little group of BFFs you have to fit in with immediately, or there's nothing there for you and you should go hang elsewhere. Close & insular friendships are for Meatspace. One of the nice things about the internet is meeting people you wouldn't normally wind up hanging out with. That "You have annoyed our highly respected members!!" shit annoys me. NO ONE is immune from legit criticism here - popular members call each other out all the time. It's not fucking high school, where the popular kids are untouchable and everybody else should lump it or GTFO.

Not saying all bullcrap is equally valid, and people should eat shit if someone rolls in and starts spouting it - but she wasn't. I don't see what the big deal is here.
