Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Slipknot...
... are much cooler on paper then they are in real life.
This seems like their general concept, based on how little I know about the group, a bunch of guys of above average instrumental talent form a metal band with two percussionists where they all wear masks, matching jumpsuits, and take as their stage names the numbers 1-9.
That sounds awesome! It sounds like metal Devo. Or an entire band of Buckethead. Either way, it's cool.
What really went down? Their songs are unimaginative rip-offs of older metal made more poppy and digestible by hard rock and 90's alternative influences. They remind me of heavy Nickelback. Their masks are all silly, cheap Halloween masks that make them look like a bunch of dumb teenagers trying to shock their parents. Not only that, but they shattered the mystique and the concept by removing their masks and showing their faces quite frequently. They couldn't even do the stage name thing right, because a lot of them now have individualized stage names besides their numbers.
How disappointing.

Don't like 'em. People kept urging me to "listen to this song, then! That's a great song!" and, much like System of a Down, I've never been able to get into their music. It just doesn't appeal to me.

I was actually into System of a Down when I was 13, I think you have to be that age to like it.

I agree with Hydro. You have to be at the right age, at least for me. Bands like Slipknot and System of a Down was an intro to alternative music. It is music that you listen to until you find the good stuff! I had only listened to "mall music" for about a year until I bought a Bauahus album then it was all up hill from there . Now looking back I feel disgusted by the music I thought was "cool" but I do not regret it.

THEY DON'T SUCK.
And SOAD has one or two great songs per album, maybe. Toxicity, Sugar, BYOB, that's the shit.

I like Slipknot and SOAD, and I used to hate them when I was 12 or so but only started to like them after listening to tons of 'real' metal, writing for a metal mag etc. I like them. But then, it has been said that I'm too open-minded about music e.g. I fucking love Beyoncè.

Personally I've never really been into them. Lately I've been in love with Jazz though. Which is entirely unrelated but idgaf.

Sadly, I know. However, I felt the phrase would become to referential and imbecilic if I said it.

My eye twitched with that question.
Jazz is not a videogame, son! You don't have a beginner level.

I mean, surely there are performers with more traditional/pop structures to their songs rather than more experimental ones. Maybe I've just gotten used to the jargon of the wrong boards.

Miles Davis because you'll see his name over and over and over again.
Jelly Roll Morton because he's a founding father and a beast on piano.
Cecil Taylor because I love free jazz.
Louis Armstrong is an absolute must listen for anyone to consider themselves a fan of music.
