I am realizing that although my life is quite boring compared to the lives of others, it is my life and I am (mostly) happy with it.

Waiting to see if this cheesecake falls properly. I'm a bit concerned as I haven't made one with this pan or in this oven (which wobbles a bit when I open the door and doesn't have a window so I have to open it to check, therefor I made things wobble a few times), but it does smell wonderful so even if it looks a bit odd it should still taste amazing.

If it was just for me I wouldn't care but I'm making it as a birthday present for my friend Caity so I wanted it to turn out perfectly, which is why I was checking on it so much which is what ended up screwing it up. I should have just sat on my ass and watched Stargate like a good little girl until the timer went off instead of checking on it ever ten minutes.

Also I would offer to make one for you but they don't ship very well.

Currently eating raw milk habanero jack cheese wrapped in bacon. I almost never eat dairy. I forget how delicious cheese is.

Also, contemplating my next knitting project.

Oooo kaluha cheesecake sounds fantastic, I pretty much only make pure new york style. I've never had vegan cheesecake that was really outstanding but I don't know many vegans who spend much time baking.

I just saw a clever recipe for turning a muffin tin upside down, forming cookie dough around the raised muffin pot exteriors and baking them to make little cookie shell-dishes that can be filled with ice cream, pudding, whipped cream ... whatever you like!

I only ever had one, a friend made one for my for my birthday because cheesecake was my favourite thing before I went vegan. It was FANTASTIC. There's a new cookbook coming out soon called Vegan Pie In The Sky which has the kaluha cheesecake recipe, and the author promises it doesn't require tubs of tofutti cream cheese, which other recipes kinda rely on.

I baked constantly when I was vegan. Professionally, even. I have a cupcake tattooed on my foot. But I'm not vegan anymore. I also don't eat grains, and therefore don't really bake. So in my mind, veganism and baking are inherently related, because they stopped at the same time. I never thought it was weird until now!

Dudes, WTF is up with all this baking around here?! Not that I mind, that is one of my favorite things about Autumn season is that it inspires so many people to make yummy things!

I am currently sipping on a rather strong rum + coke and contemplating which goodies my daughter and I will bake tomorrow. We are doing something out of the Deceptively Delicious cookbook. I may need to steam and puree up some extra veggies.

If I have jars of pureed veggies and they are past their expiration date, are they still OK to use? It's the pureed baby food and they look OK on the outside- lids haven't popped or anything.

Ummmm, how long have they been expired? If it's just a few days it shouldn't be a problem. Longer than a week and I'd throw it out.

Does it say "expired" or "best before"? If best before that's fine.

I didn't think about that. I never thought about the difference between 'expired' and 'best before' on food.

They don't use either wording set. Only dates. Some are marked as some time in summer of '09 and some are marked as some time in '10. I'll just let them sit longer and call Gerber on Monday with the batch numbers and get it straight from the horses mouth.

Do you mind if I ask why you went vegan, and why you're not vegan anymore? I'm just curious.

I went vegan when I was 13 because I was sad for CAFO animals, and conventional wisdom had me convinced it was super healthy. It made me really sick; I read everything I could about getting the right balance of amino acids and vitamins and everything else, but was still taking vitamins by the handful (literally) and going in and out of the hospital. I stuck with it for about 10 years, though, because I didn't want to eat sad CAFO cows.

I'm not vegan anymore because I discovered the incredible farms around me, where they raise happy animals that roam outside and eat the things they're supposed to be eating. So I eat lots of grassfed beef, and pastured pork and eggs, from farms that actually encourage me to visit unannounced and wander through their pastures petting the animals. I don't eat grains, legumes or processed sugar, at all, ever, in any form - turns out my myriad of "unrelated" illnesses stemmed from gluten intolerance and phytic acid overload. It's not for everyone, but I'm pretty happy.

Hrm. What do you substitute them with?

Absolutely nothing. That's the beauty. You evolved to eat vegetables, fruit, and meat. If you don't eat those things, you'll probably get sick. Grains, legumes, and sugar are all Neolithic foods - your body never actually evolved to eat them, because they're such recent introductions to the human diet that there just hasn't been time. They require no substitute, because you never needed them in the first place (they're pretty bad for you, really).

Ma'am, you are crumbling the edifice upon which my (involuntary) diet is built upon.

This is why the paleo diet makes me sad, as a former anthropology major. We have no fucking clue what our ancestors relied on, and different groups around the world had different diets. We don't have much info to go on, but someone did find pre-agriculture evidence that our ancestors were making breads out of grains.

Plus, we did evolve. People evolved to tolerate lactose as we started consuming dairy, and most people around the world are gluten tolerant.

If we were going to have our "original" primate diet, we'd be exclusively frugivores and take a chance with carrion now and then. Or eat brains to get DHA since fishing is relatively pretty new.
