The way that prostitution exists in our society makes me terribly sad. I think one would have to be slightly sick to find that sort of desperation arousing.

I'm totally okay with the people who stick the rotating balls on fancy dildos, though. I feel like they're probably all right.

I went to a panel on sex work a few months ago, it was five women, from a pro-legalization scholar, an Aboriginal rights activist, an Asian rights activist, a queer woman sex worker and a woman from a harm reduction charity.

The term "sex work" was used to say "most sex workers are empowered by their work and choose it", which pissed me off. "Sex work" includes a lot of people, like Apathy said, and it wasn't specifically about prostitutes. The two rights activists pointed out the overwhelming racist nature of prostitution in Canada and called for the Nordic model of legalization, and the harm reduction people were talking about how they meet prostitutes where they are, provide clean needles, safety tips, etc. So there was a few white people telling the racialized women that they were wrong and patronizing.

It rubbed me the wrong way, there definitely is privilege and hierarchy even in the sex industry. If a white escort is putting herself through college with her pay, its something quite different than an Asian girl being trafficked or an Aboriginal woman on the streets with few options.

I hope there's a day where it isn't degrading, but I think people are duped if they think its a position of power.

Who's not all right, the prostitute or the person hiring the prostitute? What if it's not done out of desperation? What if it's a white (read: privileged) girl and she isn't putting herself through college?

So I'm sure we can agree that human trafficking is a form of slavery and to be condemned as such. But what about prostitution itself? Where the coercion factor is no greater than economic coercion to get a job?

Are you meaning to imply here that prostitution would be a 'good' for society? When you say 'I hope it isn't degrading' I interpret that as 'I hope the stigma vanishes'.

Money is power, shouldn't the ability to earn a months wages in a few hours therefore be empowering?

Nah, she totally won this one. You're just being stubborn. Prostitution is, at best, a false sense of 'empowerment'. I've never known a prostitute irl, but I've known strippers. I don't know if it's the majority, but the ones *I* knew got into as a false sense of empower after they were ***** or sexually abused. It didn't empower them. It just made them think that most men are disgusting creeps.

Money doesn't wash the feeling of disgust from your skin. It just buys the drugs that make that line of work easier to do.
