Onixx brought up LeVayan satanism earlier, and it's worth bringing up again...
What KIND of Satanism are we talking about? The folks running around with the label "Satanist" agree on less than the Christians do.
You've got your LeVayans, basically hedonists with a splash of "will to power".
You've got the folks saying Lucifer will win the big match, folk saying that Lucifer is humanity's advocate, folks saying that Lucifer is God's agent, and are going to hell to lend a hand with the retributive redemption trip, folks saying that divine victory will not be complete until Lucifer, himself, is reconciled with God... the list goes on.
That's not even accounting for the "evul is kool!" set.
When someone tells me that they're a Satanist, they haven't really told me much of anything as to what they believe.

I'm not the most schooled on the subject...but I always think of them in terms of
a) Satanists who don't believe in a literal Satan
b) Satanists who do (claim to) believe in a literal Satan
Not that this classification is all inclusive, it's not. But, those are the most common types that I've ever met in real life or online.

An afterward, to add my own little opinion about the subject.
Satanism is no better then Christianity, in my humble opinion. Both have so many different sects, interpretations, and faith based on books corrupted by the high priests, that I'm surprised they don't all just join hands and hope for the best.
Honestly, all religion is interpretation. Interpretation of your chosen book, of other religions and of the afterlife and goals of the living life. Satanism is no differnet.
Christians have killed millions in the name of their god. Satanists have killed animals and people in the name of theirs. I don't see much difference other then that all important name.

Yeah, I do. Real Satanists don't sacrifice. It's just that they do are satanists, but because they DO believe they are worshipping Satan. Yet the big religion of the Church of Satan doesn't believe in THAT Satan.
Problem is, how to tell people the difference?

You can't tell people that Satanism has nothing to do with Satan. That just isn't true-- most true Satanists use the Christian Satan as a metaphor for the perfect or ideal being. Occult Satanists, however, are those that most people think about when they hear the word "Satanist" or "occultist" and have very much to do with Satan.

One way to get it across to people- tell them to do some research. That's what I did when I wrote a paper a few semesters ago for a class called Religions of the World on Satanism. I got myself a copy of the Satanic Bible and actually sat down and read it. Nothing like info as a cure for ignorance.

To stay on topic, I have one more point/question. I've heard before that people who follow Laveys Satanism don't believe in Satan, in a Christian sense. They why call yourself a Satanist? It just confuses the mass religion of Christianity as you being PERSONALLY opposed to them. Just call yourselves Hedonists, or something. If you don't want to be percieved in a certain way, don't play into it.
I swear, the majority of people don't even KNOW what a Hedonist is. If you called yourself that, you'd more likely here reactions similar to this:
Sylvie: So, Agnus, what does your grandson do?
Agnus: Oh, he's a Hedonist!
Sylvie: A Hedonist? Is that a good Christian sect?
Agnus: I'm not sure. I think so. Anyhow, he's very happy and seems resigned to making a good life for himself.

Lucifer was not just a fallen seraphim. He was the highest of the Archangels and the most beloved of God. Besides in Latin the name Lucifer is basically bringer of light.
And also anyone with enough brain cells would not say anything against someone else if they could not even spell nor take the time to type a word as simple as "You".
