Hear, hear ! I think it's great to answer your kid's questions honestly. If they are observant/mature enough to ask the question that means they've noticed something they just don't understand. I am not a parent yet, but I hope that I will be able to answer them in a way to help make things clearer - not to confuse them, nor necessarily shatter their innocence either. I bet it's a tough line to walk but I'm sure it's a whole lot better than ignoring or confusing them because the reality of their question is one you're not ready for them to know yet. EPS' parenting style seems to be one that may be tricky at times, but allows for her son to grow up grounded, confident in what his mom has taught him, and ready to face the world unbiased... if only more parents raised their kids to be this way!
Thank you Keltic. That story about your son is funny - he's smart enough to not believe in Santa but still make a list!!!
Geisha - we never have really been active on this board at the same time, but I did notice your absence. It's good to see you back and yes, we were wondering where you went off to!
Funny story - some kids vandalized our sidewalk and fence this weekend with spray paint. We called the cops and made a report. We were so mad! We thought it was some teenagers. We got a knock on the door, and a mom apologized for her son. She said he was outside scrubbing it up...we went outside and there were two six year olds scrubbing the paint up with soap & bleach! They were crying and snot was running down their noses...they apologized in tears...and best of all, one of the dads is a cop. He brought 3 cop cars, lights flashing and sirens blaring to 'aprehend the suspects'... I guess those six year olds won't be painting anyone's yard again. The parents may have scared the crap out of them, but I was glad they were teaching their kids the consequences of their actions instead of defending them, like a lot of parents would do.
Definitely provided us with a good laugh. We didn't even mind the paint on the sidewalk anymore...

for all the parents out there, i got this today. actually, it can be used for anyone, really - but for parents, it's priceless.
plug in your address and it shows sex offenders living in your area, where they are, who they are and the distance from your house.

Well isn't that a bitch.
This is what I got when I plugged in our address;
Oregon
Unfortunately, Oregon does not currently publicize the registered sex offenders living within the state. Consequently, we are unable to provide any information about Oregon's sex offender population.
In discussions with Oregon state officials, we learned that Oregon does plan to provide a web-based registry of its sex offenders. Their planned implementation date is July 1, 2006.
We will eagerly await the introduction of Oregon's online sex offender registry. As soon as Oregon data is available, we will provide it to Family Watchdog visitors.
How fucking comforting.

Thanks Mark, that was extremely helpful!
The last time I tried to look that shit up on a 'free' site they wanted money. Go figure.
Unfortunately there are alot of them in my area.
But I feel comfortable with being able to look up faces. I'll know them if I see them.

I've a pair of hellraisers - both boys, one's 5 yrs old and the other is 10 months.
The 5 yr old has been able to sign since he was around 6 or 7 months old and my 10 month old is starting to sign. By sign, I mean communicate via sign language. Theyre both hearing whilst I and my girlfriend are both deaf.
Just yesterday I had a vasectomy. The reason for this is that I and my girlfriend don't want any more kids - we want to have abit of fun rather than worry about the risk of pregnancy.
She initally suggested she had an operation to have her tubes "tied", which at that point, I suggested she's been through enough and that it was my time to suffer a bit of pain even if its insignificant compared to the process of labor/giving birth.
I explained to her that the option of sterilisation is more risky and complicated for a woman. That it can affect the biochemical make up (production of hormones etc).
She agreed and seems quite happy with my going through this. I've shown to her that I'll do anything for her.

Bloke, you're a very sweet guy. Most men balk at the idea of a vasectomy.
When I can't get my baby-boi to eat I make airplane noises to the tune of 'Jesus Built My Hotrod'. Works like a charm.

To compound the situation, my girlfriend's language/knowledge is different to mine since she started a suitable school very late in life at 8yrs old. Shes from Guyana where disabilities are hidden away so lacked understanding and teaching there. So I spent a fair bit of time explaining the situation as I promised 10 years ago to be there for anything, to teach her anything she wants to know and explain situations/new things
Heh, I've all sorts to get my 10 months old son to eat whom seems to prefer his mummy, so usually ends up with my gf taking over and I'm just say nearby making silly noises + faces. It gets him eating. Kids are great
Its all a learning experience, even the 2nd time lol

I'm about 2 hours driving distance north of London...it is beginning to sound like too much of a trip...think Cambridge, Newmarket - that's near me. Oh well.

Oh, it's not so bad.
I hope I have a girl so she can beat up my neighbor's little boy.
But a boy would be great too.
We will either have a Kathryn (after Hepburn) or a Connor.

Connor is one of my two most favourite boy's names in the world! Good call, Helio.

Not to knock your choice in names, Heliophobe, but why do you have to spell Katherine all weird? I hate it when people do that. Especially if you're going to be naming her after Ms. Hepburn. She didn't spell her name like that.

Thank you girls!
*rubs belly for everyone*
Geisha - I was originally going to go with Katie, so I like Kathryn because it seems a bit more informal spelling of Katherine. Plus I don't want her name to be spelled the same as everyone elses'. I'm not offended - I know that underneath your dominating exterior, there's a cream filling of sweet Geisha-ness, that is!
As per Xng's request - side view!

Kathryn is also how Hepburn spelled her name.
Did I ever tell ya'll I got to be within six inches of the Screen Legend herself once? It's a cool story if anyone is interested. I will cherish that memory for a lifetime. She was so amazing..
And I loooooooooove the little Baby Bump..
* rubs your tummy*
Have you noticed the Baby responding to music yet?
My Hellspawn LOVED the Beastie Boys when I was pregnant. I don't know if it was the Bass or what, but he really really responded to their music. He listens to just about everything I do now. It's pretty sweet.
Did you get that Book yet? I only pester you about it, because it helped me so much. Until he was in his Toddlers, that whole series saved my ass. Taught me sooooooo much. And I love how the Author is just so blunt, and includes questions from REAL moms about issues you wouldn't normally read about in a baby book.
How are you feeling? Is your Body handling the changes well?
You look Fabulous by the way, simply Beautiful..
My son asked me a question I wasn't expecting yet, the other night.
He said " Mom, do Girl ever Kiss Girls? "
I thought for a second and said " Yes. "
Then he said " Do Boys ever Kiss Boys? "
Again; " Yes. "
He thought for a moment and responded with;
" Do Girls ever Marry Girls and Boys ever Marry Boys? "
I thought for another moment, and decided to explain this one as simply as I could.
" In some States Yes, Girls can Marry Girls and Boys can Marry Boys. "
He says " How come they can't do it everywhere? "
Me;" Because some people think Marriage should be between a Man and a Woman."
Him; " Being a Grown Up is Very Complicated.."
Me; " Yes Baby, it is really, really complicated.. "
Phew.. I never expected those questions so early. I hope I handled it okay. I've always been honest with him, and I don't see any reason not to be now.
Oy. My brain hurts.
