I second what Circle V said:

Quote:
Ray Bradbury.

Ray Bradbury is so amazing that I can scarcely believe it. As I read his books, I realize that there is no way that I will EVER measure up to him in any way and that I should just curl up and die. His writing style is so original, so poetic, so beautiful that no other author comes even close. One night, I finished Something Wicked This Way Comes and decided to reread a bit of a Dean Koontz book-- The Face...

I could barely read it. It was so coarse, so common in comparison. Don't get me wrong-- Koontz is anything but common. That's just how great Ray Bradbury is.

Of course, there are others: Ernest Hemingway was a master of the artform, Gothic favorites like Lovecraft and Poe are great. Frank Herbert's Dune is awe-inspiring in its scope, and Tolkien was a genius.
I will also add Dickens to the list and Raymond Chandler

Stephen King is very good. To list all of my favorite authors would be insane.

For the most part, I try and read as much as I can on aquiring skills. This naturally leads me to less of authors, and more to organizations like "For Dummies" and "Oreilly". Of course, I also enjoy reading for recreation. Oddly enough, the classics, although somewhat ancient amuse me. Wells has to be my favorite, of all, but I also like Lovecraft, Orwell, Shakespeare's plays, Tolkein, Dickens, Bradbury, and Asimov for the win.

I also like some of the newer authors, like LeHay and Brown.

In Literature there's John Polidori who authored the first "true" vampire story called The Vampyre. Polidori was the personal physician of Lord Byron and the vampire of the story, Lord Ruthven, is supposedly based on him which would make him the first character of our, now familiar, romantic vampires.
And if I'm not mistaken Lord Byron introduced many of the common elements of a vampire in his poem The Giaour.
There's a novel by Samuel Taylor Coleridge called Christabel, The Vampire Countess (La Vampire) by Paul Féval and Carmilla by Sheridan le Fanu. Those are some of the older ones.

Then there's the new stuff. Salem's Lot by Stephen King, The Gilda Stories by Jewelle Gomez (this features a lesbian vampire), and Guilty Pleasures and subsequent books in the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton. That's about all I can think of. Hope I helped.

I personally like Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, Laurell K. Hamilton, Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen King. Then there's others, whom I won't mention.

I personally like Darren Shan and Jodi Picoult. Piers Anthony is pretty kick ass too. I just have this huge list of favorite authors. But those are my top 3.
