i'm in a state of turmoil of late, trying to squash my own wants and desires in order to put the wants and desires of my family first. it's a hard thing to do, gritting my teeth, seeing what i want, having it within reach and then turning to see my kids, my wife and knowing that although it's within my grasp, there are other things i need to consider first and foremost.
it's fair to say i'm an id-oriented individual and as such, this is difficult - but i'm gonna have to do what's right by them. right?
right.
sometimes, being a dad and a husband is tough.

No shit, I was really impressed! Actually, the tattoo artist was REALLY nervous about doing a Dali tattoo. He's also a big fan and he didn't want to come up short. As you can see, he did an amazing job. We only gave him a blurry picture (the best one we could find ), and yes, it was all free hand!
At first we thought it might take only a couple of hours, but, with ALL the detail he put in it, it took 4 1/2 hours. The artist doesn't allow any breaks (except for bathroom breaks), so it really took 4 1/2 solid hours. Vince took one bathroom break. He's VERY happy and I'm planning on getting a tattoo next now that I've seen the quality of work he does.
Here's his myspace page. I'm not even sure if he has any tattoos posted on here but it's the only info he has on the internet that I know of.

Of course, Vince's tattoo is in his pictures, he was that proud of it.

Hey, I became okay with him last night in the abortion thread, because he started actually debating rationally instead of attacking people using inflammatory terms. I'm not shallow... *hides gratuitous pics of male torsos under desk*

Ah, the adult challenge of delaying self-gratification. But, E_E, based on your posts here I think I know you in some general way. And I get the impression that when you look at your wonderful wife and those beautiful children, it really isn't that hard a choice. Because seeing them happy makes you happy ... and that is why you are a great dad.

Thank you very much. I do appreciate it. I'll keep you posted after the interview, when I find out more.

Well, actually he might live in his mother's basement. I'm not too sure about that...

I just don't like the fact that he claims to be part of such a diverse subculture and can't stand gays. He said he hates them, and it doesn't make sense from his point of view why. If he had such a horrible experience being called gay, I'd think he'd be a bit more understanding of what gays go through, having been treated as if he were gay.

Grandma in the Machine
Once when I was working at the phone store, a family came in and asked for my assistance. This dad and his two daughters placed their broken digital answering machine on the counter in front of me. They asked me if we could fix it. I told them that nobody repaired these units anymore, as a new one could be bought for as little as $14.99.
Then the father asked me if I could maybe connect the machine up to a computer somehow and recover the greeting off of it. I said that we couldn't do that either. And that's when one of the girls said, "Please, sir, isn't there any way you can save the recording from this machine?"
And that's when the recognition dawned on me that I was dealing with something bigger than just an answering machine. I apologized and said if I could think of a way to save the greeting, I would do everything I could to save it. It just wasn't within my ability to fix this.
And the dad said, "That's alright; it's just that their mother passed away last year ... and we just kinda left her voice on the machine. It made the girls feel better."
And I felt so sad, useless and frustrated ... cause I really wanted those girls to hear their mother's voice again.
...
So when I went on my recent trip, I spent a few days with my Dad at the home I grew up in near Waukesha, Wisconsin. And one night Dad pulled out a cassette deck and started playing a tape. And a voice came out of that machine that I hadn't heard in nearly 2 decades ... Grandma!
She had been in the habit of corresponding with her daughter (my Dad's sister, Sister Judy), while she was in the convent, by audio tape letters. And as I heard Grandma talk about such banal things as her grocery list and the neighbor's bat infestation, it took me right back to my childhood. It was such a powerful emotional moment.
The first thing I thought was "I really miss Grandma." And the second thing I thought was that cassette tapes are really fragile. And I remembered that family in the phone store.
So I've asked Dad to make me a copy of that tape. And I'm going to convert that tape to mp3's and burn cd's for everyone.
