They're allowed to act like that (as long as they don't harm anyone with their behaviour), but that doesn't mean that we can't call them "spooky kids" or "mansonites" if we think it suits their style/habits/tastes/behaviour/etc. They're terms that are used to identify a certain kind of person so that others know what one is talking about and one's opinion of what one is talking about.

I suppose. But It still IS used a derogitory term, even if some individuals say it is not so.
I just don't think that the whole thinking you are above something aproach is the best one.

I only call people spooky kids or Mansonites when they incorrectly claim that what they are and the music they listen to is goth. People are allowed to be what they want, but it's stupid to call yourself something you're not.

I don't consider myself in the same class as a 15 year old kid who thinks they're being scary by hanging out in a mall while looking like they just got back from auditioning a part in a shitty black metal band. Sorry.

The reality is that people have standards, whether you like it or not.

I know it's a standard, and I'm not saying I agree with those kids, but the point is they are allowed to act how ever they want to, and have their own reasons for it. No matter who disagrees.
And ones again, them saying their music is goth doesn't REALLY ruin your life.

No one here is saying that they're NOT allowed to act certain ways. Where are you getting that idea from?

And no, you're right claiming that their music is goth doesn't ruin my life personally, however as mentioned before, it's an innacurate representation of the ACTUAL goth genre, which therefore causes misconceptions to people who are just as uneducated as those proclaiming that their music is goth. Understand?

You can't clump Slipknot or Manson together with the likes of Sisters or Bauhaus. You just can't. They are 2 completely seperate genres. Completely.

I know...and I'm not saying that they are...I just can't stand the fact that people are separating themselves into groups, alienating themselves from each other on the basis of music.
So there is a spooky kid, there is this and that, we are all people in the end.
And by the way. Most people think goth is the same as macabre, and they are not uneducated because of it. It is not hard to confuse considering the similarity.

That statement is completely asinine. We'll ALWAYS be seperating ourselves into groups (ie tribes, religions, political parties, etc). We have been since the dawn of time. It all boils down to a point of interest. It's human nature. If you can't stand it, you better find the means to ignore it.

ma·ca·bre
–adjective
1. gruesome and horrifying; ghastly; horrible.
2. of, pertaining to, dealing with, or representing death, esp. its grimmer or uglier aspect.
3. of or suggestive of the allegorical dance of death.

Am I missing something here? How is goth similar to macabre? Please explain.

I think the general western culture associates black with death, hence why people wear black to funerals. And I think it's generally accepted that most goths wear a lot of black, and strive for extreme palor (or at least avoid tanning). I think it's also generally accepted that dead people tend to be paler than living people.

Hehehe. There's a lot of things one could say that to. Greed, power-hunger, laziness, categorization, chicken-like picking on people who are different... *shakes head* If there is/are (a) divine being(s) of some sort, it/they really fucked up.
If not, well... it's hardwiring left over from our days in the caves.

I concur. It's human nature to identify with those who are similar to us, whether it's race, religion, sexuality or music taste. It doesn't mean there isn't diversity, it just means we're more comfortable, initially, with those who are like us.

....don't play dumb. YOU know what I meant.
Macabre interests play a role in the Gothic subculture.
That is why whenever a person who otherwise isn't interested in goth sees something that resembles "darkness" the word goth comes to mind. I don't see how it's not obvious, and why goths get so pissed off about it.

Ideally, we'd rally around in several groups each, based on what we were interested in, and have intelligent discussions about it, but stick to well-informed opinions and dress however we wanted, etc.

Exactly. I mean we have enough discrimination with race and culture, lets not start making up new ways to discriminate people.

As for the whole macabre thing, I guess that would make Robert Pickton 'goth' as well. He's into some pretty gruesome, horrifying things. Can't get more macabre than pieces of dead hooker in freezer bags.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Graveyard.Crow, but I think she was getting more at the idea that some things goths are often interested in, or supposedly interested in, are macabre; not that macabre things are, by definition, goth. There is a difference.
That and the whole death<=>black thing doesn't do much to discredit people's impression.

umm.. no. That is not the idea I'm getting at. That's the idea that I'm getting from GC. So with that logic, other people who are interested in 'dark things', yet don't listen to goth music, are still considered goth due to the interest they take. If that's the case, then I can't see how Pickton's love for the macabre doesn't make him goth. Follow me?

Keep in mind that I'm making a point by using what appears to be GCs logic, so settle down before you give yourself an aneurysm.

The argument here is the same argument that she's been debating on other threads, and quite frankly, it's become rather stale.

Hahahaha, I love the aneurysm part... I've gotten that a few times before :\

But, as for the second part, "similar" does not mean "exactly the same as."
