Only people in third-world countries would be the ones eating placenta. Here in the US, once the placenta is delivered, it is immediately taken to be examined and have tests run on it.
That is fucking disgusting.

I wouldn't be so quick to make that kind of distinction if I were you.

It's not even true. People eat placenta here.
In fact, you can find images of people cooking them if you google it.

From Wikipedia: In most mammalian species, the mother bites through the cord and consumes the placenta, primarily for the benefit of prostaglandin on the uterus after birth.
Also, it is rich in nutrients and in the case of non-domesticated animals, they need it as they are too weak to fend for themselves (find food etc) immediately following birth.
If cats/etc can do so, why not us humans?
Are we any better than these other species? To each his own, it doesn't bother me either way.

GAH! I am so pissed off!
I was reading an article on msnbc.com called, "Who's Getting Abortions?"
Anyway, this one black woman had an abortion at 19 years old..and this is what she said:
“It wasn’t hard to realize I didn’t want another child at that time. I was trying to take care of the one I had, and going to college and working at the same time.”
WHAT?!....
What is wrong with people?
Why are you having sex if you do not want a kid??
It's not that fucking hard to keep your legs closed!
OR, you could have used a fucking contraceptive!
I hate people who do stupid shit like that.
Goddamn.
Here's a link to the article if anyone else wants to read it.

“We give free sex education, free condoms, free birth control,” she complained. “That’s almost like permission to have free sex, and the higher the rate of sexual activity, the higher the rate of unintended pregnancy.”
You know they are going to have sex either way right? Would you rather have them not have the condoms and birth control and having sex anyways, or rather have them being given something to at least reduce the chance of pregnancy?

Between her smoking and Mark's drinking it would have died anyways. I know this sounds mean but sometimes just sometimes I dislike my mother. But I do love my mother just some times she realy pisses me off.
But not as much as Tad (My father).

I've NEVER heard of people eating placenta in the US, and I am in Nursing School. I've seen my fair share of vagina, newborns, and placenta, and once it comes out of a vagina, it is promptly taken away to be examined and then properly disposed of, as it is a biohazard waste. If people are eating it here in the US, it must be people who deliver at home, hopefully in a sanitary place and with someone experienced in childbirthing.
I think it's sickening, quite like how I think mayonnaise or eggs are sickening. Those are things I refuse to eat, because they are nasty to me. It's MY opinion. I wouldn't eat any human body organ, even my own. You're not supposed to, anyway. The body can't properly digest it's own organs or blood.
That's nice that it's part of someone's culture, but that still doesn't make me like it. Eating lamb brains and raw cow meat is a part of my culture, but you won't see me taking part in that.
And also...Cats lick their own butts. Should we start licking our butts instead of using toliet paper and soap and water? I'm gonna go with no, but as you said, to each, his own. Who am I to judge =)

To each his own is true, but like someone else said, our bodies are not very efficient at consuming our own organs. And it's not as if we need it to sustain us after birth. That's what the boyfriend or husband is for. My mom sent my dad to go get her a burger after giving birth to my sister. ;D

They used to give mothers beer right after delivery to calm them. Not anymore...while the beer did calm the mothers, alcohol was then present in the breastmilk that baby was drinking. No need for drunk neo-nates =)

Ooh! Beer? My mother said I used to freak out if there were traces of caffine from her tea in the breast milk. Intoxicated babies, wrong on SO many levels but sorta funny mental imagery. So back when everyone used to drink ale, how do you think that affected babies?

If during pregnancy, the risk of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is always there.
After delivery, it does depend on how much the woman has drank, how fast her body metabolizes the alcohol, and when she feeds the baby. The amount of beer women drank from the hospital after delivery really isn't enough to do any real damage (again, depending on the woman's body), although it is probably enough to mess up their sleeping.
Breast-feeding is actually the healthiest thing a woman can do for her baby. It might suck a bit for mom, but what that baby is drinking is formulated specifically for that particular baby. (As long as the mom is not a raging alcoholic junkie!)

Can the mother still breastfeed if she's giving the baby up?

When a woman gives a baby up for adoption, they immediately take the baby away, so she won't "change her mind". I'm not really sure what the protocol is for open-adoptions, though. I haven't been in that situation yet, nor has it been covered in school. Looks like I have a question for my instructors...!
As for the adpotive mother nursing her baby---Yep! It takes a bit of manual stimulation and introduction to two key hormones through therapy--Oxytocin (hormone that cause a women to go into labor) and pro-lactin (causes milk production). But they can definately do it.

I really feel like breast-feeding your baby, when you have no intent to keep it, is a really REALLY bad idea.

If all that was directed at me, I've already said you can do whatever you like. It doesn't bother me. As long as you don't force your opinions down my throat and vice versa, we're A-OK!

Yes, it was.
Because she is a black woman.
What the hell would you like me to say?
Would you like me to call her 'this one colored woman'?
'this one african-american' woman?
'this one negro woman'?
what if it had been a white woman..would you have said anything at all about it?
i don't think you would have.
Don't tell me you get offended just because i added in her race.
I mean, hell, it's not like i meant anything by it.
damn...

It's offensive because it implies that white is the default race.
You wouldn't say "I saw this white woman the other day blah blah blah."
