| Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Tin Can = Joy Division?
I was just wondering if there are any Joy Division songs that -don't- sound like they were recorded in a tin can.
I think the lyrics are good, and I can surmise that the music would be wonderful...if it was recorded right.
Why does Joy Div have such bad sound quality? No other bands from that time do. And I think I could get into them, if the recorded sound wasn't so third-rate quality-wise..
Just one of those mysteries I was wanting some insight on..

No, man. Check out Joy Division when they were more punk.
I don't know exactly what the song was called, but the lyrics are like:
I've seen the troubles and the evils of this world. I've seen the stretches between godliness and sin.
Some of their stuff is decently recorded. You just have to look for it. In fact, it would just behoove you to have the entire collection of every song ever made by Joy Division AND New Order.

I guess that's a matter of taste. I think "Closer" is beautifully produced. "Unknown Pleasures" has Martin Hannett's signature production sound all over it (is it his drum sound that sounds like a tin can to you?) and some people hate Hannett. The truth is they spent alot on the production of JOY DIVISIONS only 2 official albums.
If you have a good production copy of "Closer" and still think it sounds third rate then chances are you won't like anything they recorded.

It's not the drum sound or anything like that; if I heard the same songs done in exactly the same way live, then I think it would sound awesome!
But, whenever I hear a song of theirs [I'm using internet radio right now to research various bands], it just sounds like the people recording it used inferior tape or the studio wasn't designed for optimal music recording or...something. Like, it's not anything the band is doing that's off, but something the recorders were doing...or, not doing...that doesn't sound quite as good as it could.
It's like looking at an old, beautiful painting. You can see how beautiful it is now, but you can also tell that some of the lines and colors have faded...but you know that if you could have seen it when it was brand-new, that it would have taken your breath away even more than it does now.
Does that make sense?

Heh heh. Oh, I wish I -could- go out and buy all these albums, but that takes money, which is something precious scarce for me these days.
But, I'll -definitely- keep those albums in mind. ^^

Joy Division are great band and they are I suppose an acquired taste, but I reccommend these songs, if you want well recorded but very impressive.

Shadowplay
New Dawn Fades
The Eternal
Heart & Soul
The Only Mistake
Twenty Four Hours
She's Lost Control
Transmission
Fom Safety to Where?
Decades
Day Of The Lords
Means To An End

It was their producer's decision entirely. He would compress the drums the such an extreme amount that it did come off as a tin-can. I wouldn't have it any other way, personally.

That would be fine if it was just the drums, but it's not; it's the drums, the voice, the guitars...just the overall sound of the entire thing.
It sounds like a very amateur recording studio was trying to record a very professional band.
I'm not sure how else to explain it.
I -can't- be the only one who's noticed this..

I have any extra copy of "Closer" I always pick up the newest version that comes out. Send me an address I can mail it to and it's yours.
1. Atrocity Exhibition
2. Isolation
3. Passover
4. Colony
5. A Means to an End
6. Heart and Soul
7. Twenty Four Hours
8. The Eternal
9. Decades
May depend on where "Dixie's Fat-Clogged Left Ventricle" is. I figured it would be in the south somewhere.
