Stevie Nicks?

I've done a search, and couldn't really find a definitive answer. I decided to stop searching and just ask because I've read so many old threads that now my eyes are going blurry. So I bring it before the divine council of Gothicness. A friend of mine and I are unsure if she falls under the banner of Goth or not. He says yes, and I'm not sure. I mean, she's right there on the fence, isn't she? Thoughts?

I just ran a search and goth this site:

http://www.nicksfix.com/

It has a biography and trivia. Got it on the first search.

Are you serious? Stevie Nicks? Of Fleetwood Mac?

I would say no.

AH! But can you say she has not been or didn't influence a style of gothic dress at all? Also, you have to keep in mind the time frame in which she started wearing this stuff.

Also, Fleetwood Mac itself wasn't a "Gothic" band. But what of her solo work in relation to the wider range of accepted forms of sub-genres? I'm not saying she's Bauhaus, but perhaps somewhere along a "lite fare" kind of line.

Well, she was a major plot point in that Gypsy 83 movie. Plus, Billy Corgan, who wore shit like black mumus for a while, did a cover of Landslide.

Oh yeah! And that movie too! I can't believe I forgot it. It was a birthday gift two years ago. Yes. I take on your points too.

She might have had a Goth look at one point, but that doesn't make one Goth. She wasn't part of the Punk or Post-Punk movements, and unlike Nick Cave, I wouldn't call her "not Goth but liked by Goths" because I've never heard any talk about her until now.

Either you like her or you don't. Why the fuck the possibility of Gothiness even matter? What is it with you people and qualifications?

Who put the twist in your panties?

I don't know if that was directed at me or not, but I was just answering the OP's question. I never said Nicks was bad, it's just pretty clear to me that she's not Goth.

And I like a lot or music that isn't Goth, by the way.

No one cares what you like. It does not matter to anyone that you like non-Goth music. I fail to see why half of this forum is defining goth in some kind of parameter and what is thus defined within in terms of media, and the other half is that Goth is more openly defined or not defined as if it is a state of mind and not a genre per se....

Seems that too much time is spent stating what it is and what it isn;t, and then what is Goth and what isn't. What a crock.

I don't care what you like as long as you have valid reasons for liking it- and not just because it's genre appropriate and/or debatable as such.

Well obviously if something is goth, it's good. So if it's not goth, it's not good.

Even though this is perfectly defunct logic, there seems to be a collective idea that we can't like something unless it's goth. Nevermind that that we might actually like something based on its artistry.

Do you notice this weird trend going on about some odd inherent desire for people to be able to put shit under the goth genre as if it makes it more credible to certain listeners?

The most elementary way I can express it is like this:

"Hey, Linkin Park is an awesome band. Can we say they're goth so that everyone will like them?"

"No..."

"You're just being elitist! Waaahhhhh!!! I want you to accept my liking of a band! ARRRGGGHHH!"

Anyhow, I don't know who Stevie Nicks is.

It's all good. If her style is anything like I think it is, I prefer Gordon Lightfoot. Have you heard his song about The Edmund Fitzgerald? It's fucking haunting and fucking awesome.

Let's' not forget that it is also accompanied by the trend of vehemently saying that they are not goth but perfectly know what goth really is and coincidentally fits with each and every one of their "dark" tastes.

Damn it, Jillian. I wasn't ready for that. My brain tripped on its own dick.

I should really be getting some sleep.
