Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern

[L'Oiseau Noir]

Has anyone, by chance, caught this show on the Travel channel? (At least, that's the channel I pick up on here). It's about this American man who goes all around the world and samples weird (by our standards at least) dishes all across the globe.

I find it rather interesting. There's something intriguing about the strange foreign cuisines people eat in different regions of our world. I especially enjoyed the Asia episodes (which I think was during the first season), and have been swayed by it to try a few dishes I normally wouldn't have touched. Namely snake, so far. It wasn't bad, either. I've also tried alligator wings, which look exactly like chicken wings but are made from the meat of the alligator's legs.

I also rather liked the episode when Andrew sampled dishes in Bolivia; and some of it was some of the weirdest shit I've ever seen. One particular dish involved utilizing the organs (every organ) of a llama, and making a sort of stir fry with it. Another particular dish I thought was way out of my comfort zone was this dish they made with rotten potatoes, which farmers peeled with the balls and heels of their feet.

So, what are (if you've seen it) thoughts on the show? Shoot.

Yeah, it's actually very similar to that. The only thing that differentiates the two is Andrew samples a lot stranger things than Anthony does, and that the show revolves more around the food and culture, than just the culture like Bourdain's usually does.

If it's the Travel channel you're watching Anthony's show, you can catch Andrew's at 10pm every Tuesday.

Trust me, it's worth the watch.

I watch this show a lot; I find it rather amusing.

Though there have only been a few things on the show that I think are just completely out of bounds. Though I do think that I'm going to have to try frog sashimi sometime. Stinky Tofu is one of the most disgusting things I've seen on there, except for possible Bird's Nest Soup.

I wonder if he could be made to eat Ghost Soup somtime? :P

The turtle hot-pot was rather sad to me, as I'm fond of the little guys. I'd also be hard pressed to make myself eat snakes for the same reason.

Gator is delish.

Oh gosh, the stinky tofu was digusting. And the way he described it... yuck. I wonder how they manage to stomach putrid food? Birds Nest Soup was definitely not the worst; if I remembered correctly, there was a soup in one of the Asian episodes made from spit of some kind. I also remember an episode where Andrew went to Beijing, I think, and ate at a resaurant that specialized in penis dishes.

The tutle hot-pot uspet me a bit, too, as I find turtles to be quite adorable little creatures. And snake really isn't that bad. I know this metaphor is old and commonplace, but it literally does taste like chicken. Just a tad lighter.

That aside, I love Bizarre Foods and try not to miss an episode if i can help it. The jellied moose nose and whitefish ice cream in Alaska was so out of control though.

Actually, for some reason the Southern food special was the one that mad me want to vomit the most. Greasy and there was just too much on the plate for me..

It was actually the southern US gulf coast episode that drove me to trying alligator for the first time. Which, may I add, was exquisite.
