Can anyone recommend any good goth stores in the San Francisco area?

Try going to Trippnyc.com ( I think that's it.) and find the retailers link and then type what state you live in and then it should come up with a list of cities. These sell Tripp NYC clothing and that's usually a marker of a Gothic clothing store. Tripp has some OK stuff but it's not that great quality and it's really expensive at times. You just need to check the seams and buttons/studs.

There are also Gothic online stores that can offer high quality stuff.

Google for Hot Topic in San Francisco. That's an OK store, but just be careful what you buy. You can spend a lot of money real quick if you go overboard in that store. Luckily they do exchanges and are a little lenient. They have lots of friendly employees.

Hot Topic is also a retailer of Alchemy Gothic, which is high quality pewter merchandise based in England. If you buy jewelry from Hot Topic, ALWAYS buy Alchemy stuff if you want something that lasts.

Here's a warning though. I spent 60 dollars on an Alchemy necklace + 2 bondage bracelets from Hot Topic. The necklace was $32 and the bracelets were $10.99 a piece, plus tax.

They have a lot of cute stuff there though. I like their fishnets and skirts the most.

Oh! There's also a store in my area that sells some gothy stuff called Spencer's Gifts. They have a lot of room decor and sell necklaces and stuff. A person at Hot Topic told me that they might even carry ankh necklaces! if you have a Spencer's in your local mall, I would try it out.

Online shopping is by far the easiest way to find what you're looking for and to compare prices. /ramble

I can't remember specific stores (they're probably listed above) but while I was in San Francisco I stayed in the Haight-Ashbury area and it was awesome for shopping. Plenty of gothic and vintage clothing, and there was a thrift store like Goodwill or something that was clearly kept in business by donations from the local goths. Oh and it's also where I bought my Edwardian top hat from a vintage store that I think was called 'La Rosa'... or something.

I wouldn't know exactly. I came here to learn too. I was told it was mainly a DIY approach to fashion.

What if a "Victorian" goth went through the trouble to make their own clothing? Certainly that would deserve some kind of respect I would guess.

Then again, I don't know about Victorian fashion as a good thing. Sure, it looks nice, but a Nazi SS uniform also looks rather sharp.

I found a cane that I like with a skull top for only 40 dollars! I found another top hat from a store I can go to and order from for only 50 dollars. It's a felt top hat though.

I found an 80 dollar EGA tux suit. I can get a cravat shirt for 50 dollars on that site made of like silky material, or I can get a cravat shirt with frilled cuffs for 30 dollars more. I found a brocade vest/waist coat for 90 dollars and brocade trousers for 78 dollars. I think that's what I'll get. The cane can wait. Next I'll focus on a cravat shirt and then a high gate coat. THEN The cane and maybe a top hat.

Heh Slash N Burn is the cheapest I've seen so far. I'll check to see if Hot Topic has any platform buckle-up boots for under 80 dollars, but I doubt it.

I'm thinking about getting a velvet duster I saw for 40 dollars on Dark Angel and some platform boots/plain buckle-up, and some cheaper black pants.

The Victorian outfit would take me a year easily just to get a god damn outfit! I can get a complete badass *internet priced* outfit for under 200 dollars! Jacket and all! I mean the Victorian outfit IS nice, but it costs too much.

Now let's see at the lowest price possible and still get my outfit:

Top hat: 50 dollars
Cane: 170 dollars
Jacket: 250 dollars
Waist Coat: 90 dollars
Cravat shirt: 85 dollars
Trousers: 90 dollars
Grand Total: 735 dollars. (Not including tax and S&H!)

I know about 2 "victorian goths", and they don't spend gross amounts on their clothes. They thrift shop, use ebay, and look in cheap department stores for their clothing. And they still manage to look good. If anything, cyber fashion would be a good example of drones giving in to overpriced speciality clothing.
