Check this wild shit out....

Dubai 1990

http://www.dubai-architecture.info/Dubai1990-full.jpg

Dubai as it is today:

Look closely, that's the same street. You can see the same buildings.

How long has it been? 18 years? 18 years for that kind of development? Impressive.

Dammmmmmn... seeing those same buildings there makes me think "photoshop" though I'm fairly sure it isn't. That's insane.

Goodness.
Makes me think about China's sudden development.
And how I've been living in this small city..what 10 years? And it's not even close to that.

I live in a fairly large city and I've seen lots of development but nothing near that. Most of our funds our going towards roads/highways which are a mess here.

Dubai is putting a buttload of its money into tourism and related development so it will still have a source of income after people drop the whole oil thing. Apparently all the military people angle for a couple days of stop-over in Dubai on their way to Afghanistan.

I have a friend from Dubai. He says there's dust everywhere from building theme parks and buildings and stuff.

Just think of what we could have built up in the United States had we not traded all of our money for oil. American dollars built Dubai. Well, with a little cash from China and India too.

That's because America as a country thinks it needs to go out and 'do things'. You know what's funny?

Is that one of the communities where they've allowed minute amounts of capitalism through? I was reading someplace not that long ago that there are four cities where they've allowed corporate capitalist companies to build and grow, and now the cities are expanding outrageously. I can't remember if Dubai is one of them.

Dubai rocks. They have the largest hotel in the world, and soon will have the largest every man-made island in the world (shaped like a palm tree).

I'll find links for it. It's really amazing.

Apparently, the cheapest room you could get in their best hotel is 2 grand a night.

It's so huge and can really only support 500,000 people supposedly. So exactly what is this city for? How will they keep something like this going? What kind of tourists do they think they can attract? Maybe there's way more rich people than I give credit for.

They're just beyond crass.

Pretty, yes, but the money could go to much better causes.

It's good for them. Like LaBelle said, it's to get tourism going so they have a source of income after the oil is gone.

Have you thought of the social structure that goes on there?

Again, I'll point out. HOW do you afford to live there? I'm doubting there's a middle class in all this. I can't see how there can be.

This city strikes me as the epitome of excess.

It's simple. They are socialised countries. Free healthcare, free school/college, etc.

But for who? I know that's true. But I heard that you only get that if you're a natural born "Dubaian"(sp).

Has anyone really looked into who's fronting the labor? And I'm not talking about the rich Dubai dude that's running an operation. I'm saying what muscle is building this city?

Essentially. Did you read the articles, Jillian?

Something about that city just doesn't sit well with me.
