Smile Goth garden/recipes

Okay, I've been thinking, which is always dangerious. This should probably be two posts, but on the first one: Had the coolest thing given to me recently. It's called an Heirloom tomato plant. (No place to plant it, so I had to give it away. Bummer). However, an Heirloom tomato is unique in that is a black tomato. How cool is that? How goth is that?. So stuff for a goth garden... any thoughts?. I would plant black dahlias, and black orchids and black Peruvian roses -- if I could afford them, although red tomatoes are equally goth.

As for the recipe thing. I don't know if there is a thread already out there, but with such an international 'community' we could have one heckuva recipe thread. (G.net could even publish a G.net recipe book if it panned out, the proceeds going to needed improvements).

So-- a few things: 1) What would you put in a goth garden?
2) Recipes. Everybody's got them and I bet there are some amazing cooks out there. 3) Should the recipe thread be separate. 4) G.net admins, if it pans out, what about a recipe book?

Any takers?

How about blood oranges? I like them because they are not quite as sour as normal oranges.

As for flowers, I like nightshade, we used to have them but Mom made me pluck them all up, since they are poisonous she was afraid my dog might eat them. I also like bleeding hearts, not really gothy but very pretty ^_^

Heh, I could write up some recipes for you - I´m the preferred cook by everyone in my family, it seems - but I only do vegan.

As for gothy stuff, dark plums and aubergines? Cherries? Depends entirely on what sort of garden you want, though. I like my gardens to be useful -and- pretty.

You can turn cookies and pastry black with black food colouring/icing colouring. I made Black coloured lemon flavour Bauhaus cookies once ^_^

We have an ornamental black grass in our garden,I think it's called Mondo Grass or something.

You, can get black Agapanthus' , black Geraniums, black stemmed Dogwood, black Bamboo ( we have this ) black Elder, Budlea comes in bright purple and a darker "black" variety, smells GORGEOUS and attracts hordes of butterflies, Phormium is like a big black grass/palm , the Japanese Maple is a smallish ornamental tree with dark purplish red leaves and a dark wood/stems, make sure to keep it out of the wind though, they get windburn really easily, ours died We have a black variety of Sycamore tree round here as well.

Cyclamen has dark leaves, and pretty red flowers, Black pansies and violas are easily available, Privet is a dark leaved shrub and can be grown into hedges, Peonies have fairly dark green foliage and those gorgeous huge deep red flowers, you can get black or very very dark red Fuschias, and virginia creeper turns a gorgeous deep red in autumn, as you can see to the left of my head in THIS picture of me. That's on our back fence. It's lovely.

If ever I manage to get a house my garden will be crammed with black plants.

Thanks for some of the ideas, folks.

Okay, since I started this:

Easy Greek Taramosalata (Farmer's Salad)

Ingredients: 1 can navy beans
1 can dolmades (stuffed grape leaves)
1 head white cabbage
1 head red cabbage
4 large carrots
1-1/2 cups salad dressing
(depending on how tangy you like it, either 2 parts olive oil to 1 part vinegar or vice versa).
1 teaspoon Cavender's Greek seasoning.
1/2 cup kalamata olives
1 cup feta cheese

In a large salad bowel LAYER, in this order: Navy beans (cooked first), shredded carrots, shredded red cabbage and shredded white cabbage. Top with crumbled feta cheese. Top that with rings of dolma (grape leaves - - preferably the kind that are stuffed with minced lamb and pearl rice) and kalamata olives. Mix either 1 part olive oil to 2 parts vinegar or vice versa, and combine with Greek seasoning, then pour over salad and allow to sink to the bottom. Chill and enjoy. (This is especially fun to prepare with friends and/or family and will feed a small army).

BTW if you can't get these ingredients, substitute your own.
