Black Roses and Hail Mary's by Maria Alexander
Quote:
As he awoke under the cement overpass, Jonathan heard the distant growl of cars, his own raspy breath, and the old woman's gentle weeping. The last thing he remembered was Kiro and Sushime cackling over the squeal of tires, although those sounds had escaped into the smog hours ago. Wiping the long, grimy strands of his dyed dark brown hair from his face, Jonathan opened his eyes blearily, gravel biting his back through a beer-stained t-shirt. Steel-tipped black boots, leather pants ripped at the thigh "Fuck!" and a head full of heroin dreams, rolled by his best friends

I know it sounds stupid, but I love twisted takes on fairy tales and Disney movies. And I loved this one.

I enjoyed it. In all honesty, I think it lacked direction and the dialogue could have had a little more thought put into it. However, the emotion of the piece was communicated exceptionally well. Getting a cheap high from sniffing glue captured a moment of desperation that I think many (if not all) people can relate to. I liked it. Thanks.

I liked it, too. Expecially since it used one of my favorite words "smoldered" in it. =)

I loved re-reading this. Mary Poppins. It's been a while since I have seen that movie. This was a good story. I loved it.

Wow, amazing detail in the descriptions of the woman and Jonathan. It was really well written. Do you think you could right novels, I think you would be really good at it!

I liked it as well. The description was nice and I liked this twist for Mary Poppins' character.

I have not seen this. However, I agree that twisted takes on fairy tales are a welcome depature from the status quo that it's become. I have a memory of hearing a 'Grimm's Fairy Tale' as a child; a take on 'Three Little Pigs.' It was told from the wolf's point of view.

That sounds interesting.
I liked this story, but I think it lacked detail.

good story!
I am new to the Goth scene, but I admit I have let those around me tell me what I am... I dyed my hair black because I wanted a change, though I didn't know why I chose black. My sister saw it, and told me it wasn't me.... my niece saw it and asked if I was "going Goth"... I told her maybe. Once I started really looking into what Goth is (and isn't), I realized I wasn't "going Goth"... I AM Goth.
To the story, I have read a few Gothic stories and poems, this is the first that has made me ask, "Okay, what happens now? Does Johnathon go home and keep his life as it was? Has his life been fleetingly or lastingly changed? What's next? Is there more?"

Actually, I would like to dispute that claim. You see, I went on your Myspace, in a sudden fit of masochism, and while it was indeed a painful experience for me, I found that you do not in fact listen to any gothic rock, therefore making your claim to be a goth entirely void. This is not the forum for you.

You forgot MCR and the silhouette of the church spire in the background...

I enjoyed reading this and the occasional chills that came along with the old woman's 'vague' references about her past occupations. Plus the first-person narration makes it all the more creepy. I've always loved fairytales (the original versions and their twisted revivals).
