Stephen King slaps Stephanie Meyer around with his pop-novelist dick
I'm really tired, but at the moment I'm finding this hilarious. Mediocre writer states obvious, news at eleven.

'Said' is not the only word in the English language to convey dialogue, Rowling has not learnt this lesson yet.

Considering her books are targeted at young children, I really wouldn't expect them to be linguistic masterpieces.

The only reason that children can't read well is because none of their books are linguistic masterpieces.

I'd have to agree with King here. Rowling's books are great, if you keep in mind who they are written for. Meyer's, on the other hand, are not, but I think he may be on to something with the sexual connotation thing.

True, but King himself is big on sticking to said. He pushed that point very hard in On Writing, so it's not surprising he praises her for it too.

JCC, I'm going to tell you this now.
Rowling is a terrific writer. She is extremely good. Particularly due to the fact that she has an ability to emotionally involve the reader with her characters on a level that's usually reserved for more intimate mediums than literature.
The fact that she's able to do this, utilizing relatively simple language, and still connect with readers who posses such a wide range of ages and backgrounds is nothing short of remarkable.
If you decide to continue to pursue your interest in literature, you're going to learn (as you become more experienced) that it's not flowery language that defines a master writer. The mark of a master is economy of language. The best writing is about implication. It's about saying the most with the least amount of words while still conveying a coherent story.
Writing is about the implicit, not the explicit. Unfortunately, the way most people are trained early on, they often come out of highschool thinking the opposite.

Back in the day, there was a man.
His friend told him the world was going to end and the man didn't believe him.
Being hijacked onto an alien ship, he went on several misadventures until the terminus of his journey where he essentially came back to his own planet in a newer version. He then decides that adventure is more important and leaves.
The end.
I...... AM A MASTER!

Erm...... this isn't a joke, is it?
Rowling most certainly isn't economical with her words. Her style is pretty similar to Stephenie Meyer's, actually.

Also, about JCC's claim:
I just turned to a random page in 'Sorcerer's Stone' and found this:
"Don't ask questions!" snapped his uncle.

So King uses the word "orgasm" in his writing and Meyer doesn't, so what? Some audiences prefer romance without the sexual pressure. There are such people as "prudes" in the world. There are different tastes which results in different writers targeting those tastes.

King's a better writer, God fucking damnit. The part about sex was King noting Meyer's appeal to young girls.

I agree, I love King's books (The Stand is my favorite). But I think King should be magnanimous enough to encourage other writers despite their different writing styles and genres. Taking potshots is a Kelly Osbourne / Christina Aguilera type peccadillo.

No, I'm not.
She uses weird adjectives and too many adverbs and repeats them constantly throughout.
And she says things like "Her hair was a violent shade of violet."

Yeah, she occasionally says 'snapped' too. Less often will be 'cried', 'screamed', 'called'. She sure likes variety.

Very few of the books that I read have flowery language. Rowling just sucks.

Yes, the content of the seven Harry Potter books and the lack of variety contained therein was entirely fabricated by me in an elaborate attempt to 'shit' you, and right now I am sat with a smug look upon my face at the entirely satisfactory conclusion of my hilarious prank.

Rowling is an excellent children's author. The hatred she inspires among the literary-minded is due mostly to the fact that those old enough to know better read the books in lieu of more sophisticated adult writing, and have become an insane phenomenon whilst more deserving literature festers in obscurity. Also, despite some positive tolerance-themed storylines, her rendering of female characters is often woefully stereotypical. Her prose style is often tiresome, but there's no denying she can tell a story and create some thoroughly enjoyable characters.
Despite all this, she is often witty and highly skilled at plotting. The books are by no means bad; they are simply not flawless and, most importantly, written for children. I would not consider fans fools, although I may point out that in terms of talent, Rowling is relatively small fry compared to hundreds upon hundreds of others.
