That's exactly it, Tam. 4/20 is national "get high" day, stemming from the common belief of getting high at 4:20. All things 420 are associated with cannabis.
And I, too, have never tried it. I bet my mom will celebrate the rest of the day once she's off work.

I have smoked marijuana like four times now, and never noticed whatever effect it is that it's supposed to have. One of my friends assures me that I was quite high, but I can't quite see the point in an altered state of mind which can only be detected by other minds.

No one gets high the first few times they smoke. It's more learned than anything. If you ingested it you'd get better results since you're receiving THC directly.
And don't listen to your friends. From all of the people I know, you'll definitely know whether or not you're high.
