Collections... or Clutter?

I see the ads for Sideshow.com on this forum, pushing all their action figures and sculptures, and I like it a lot. I collect toys, and 600+ action figures are hiding somewhere in my apartment. Some days, I love my collection, and others... I see it as clutter, weighing me down.

Do you collect anything? Or are you fiercely opposed to either consumerism or clutter?

Describe, post photo links, rant, whatever...

I have to admit, I am impressed with folks who have five (or so) very nifty items, and they consider it a complete collection. It seems like great self control, to me.

I collect dolls. Any type really, but I guess it started when I won a Yui-Sai Wa Wa doll in a competition a few years back. She was an exclusive in China/America & you can't buy Yui-Sai dolls anywhere in my country. Since then I brought Sailor Moon Dolls, Bratz, Disney dolls, Living Dead dolls & I won a china doll a few years ago. Sadly my sisters smashed her head, though I still kept it.

Sweet

I collect LOTR dolls... I've made a huge large ground (that looks real; with mountain's, river's, Helm's Deep ) in the basement and everyday I change the formations of the dolls, and go to city to collect more dolls of LOTR.

I collect a bunch of crap. Mostly it is Star Wars action figures. (No laughing or pointing fingers). I have probably 6 to 700 of them - maybe more, I lost count - still on their original cards. I tried hanging each one on a push pin on the walls, but I ran out of wall space in two bedrooms, and I still have a few boxes left. I have a bunch of the old school figures too, from when I was a kid. But they're all in boxes in my mom's attic. I collect the 12" SW dolls too, but I've only got about 20 or so of them.

Other things are McFarlane's Spawn figures, tho I only get those that I think look the coolest... I have Vlad from McFarlanes Faces of Madness series, and Red Riding Hood from his Twisted Fairytales. I want my own set of Tortured Souls, first series. And I have several of the SW Unleashed figures, including the L.E. Vader from best buy, which isn't as L.E. as I thought it was. My 'bf' collects Marvel figures, and McFarlane's Dragons series. Oh, and I also collect stuffed teddy bears. I know, its really gay...

I collect classical movies, though I crave to have some of German Expressionism, of which I haven't found any, but I have other pretty good movies like Citizen Kane and Gone with the Wind.
Now, there's also the recent movies which deserve to be in a hall of fame, like The Phantom of the Opera, Edward Scissorhands, A Beautiful Mind, The Aviator, etc....
I'm also beginning a collection of books of my favorite authors (e.g. Dan Simmons), books that will stand the test of time (e.g. The Picture of Dorian Gray), books of poetry, and some books that are not in print anymore, so it's hard to get them ( a teacher once told me she had inherited an original Mein Kampf from her english grandparent, but I never got a chance to read it *sigh*)

I don’t collect anything. I’m too practical to justify spending money on things that have no use or purpose. Plus, things don’t mean much to me. I think traveling and/or a memorable experience is a far better use of my money than a thing.

That’s not to say I never buy anything. I just generally limit it to things I love that are also practical – like my adorable bat soap pump! - or that I will use repeatedly, like movies and books.

I’m also a neat freak who is stressed by clutter. In fact, I’m in the process of getting rid of stuff I don’t use. Even without being a collector, I’ve managed to accumulate too much clothing and jewelry. Thankfully, the internet is here to help me sell it off!

I think many people waste too much of their money on material things. They buy all sorts of stuff they don’t need, run up debt on their credit cards… then complain that they don’t have enough money or wonder why they have no savings. Sadly, America is built on that foundation.

I admire your discipline, TOIB. I caught the collecting bug from my parents, though, and grew up thinking garage sales and auctions (now eBay auctions) were cheap entertainment.

Bare floor space is valuable too.

This thread reminded me of the best wind-up toy I've ever seen.

My bf's brother owns this:

NUNZILLA!

Wind her up and watch sparks fly out of her mouth!

BF???

Not X?

I love dragons. I don't have any, but I love them. I'd love to buy some of McFarlane's Dragons series. I have a thing for winged things.

I collect interesting metal detector finds that have been unearthed, mostly in England. My most recent additions were a nifty group of Roman copper and bronze coins,a King Charles I Rose Farthing, and an Edward III long cross penny.

When I'm not scanning EBay for artifacts, I also collect vintage 1980's music patches.

Eh... I collect bones that I find on the beach.

I'd like to collect hats, but I have no money.

I also have a large collection of mounted insects and arachnids on my wall, though they are neither technically mine nor mounted by myself. There's a mounted bat, too... how's that for Gothic?

I don't collect them anymore, but I used to collect sea shells. I had a pretty big collection, too, but then I started collecting crab shells I found on the beach, and they stink, so Mom god rid of it all one night.

I don't know if it counts as collecting, but I had an origami obsession. Whenever I had a candy bar I'd use the shiny foil for origami paper and make butterflies or paper cranes, then attatch string to them and hang it from my ceiling. I bet I had 100 cranes and butterflies before I gave them to my little cousin, though I've been thinking when I get my own apartment next year I'll try and go for a thousand paper cranes, so I can get a wish granted ^_^

Of course that's a collection, and a very good one at that. Makes me wish I had this sort of talent(or patience).

I don't really collect that much. Most of my collecting stems from my obession with anime. I have quite a few collectors edition DVDs and some anime action figures (that my fiancee annoying refers to as cartoons and dolls). I did fall into the McFarlane Dragons though.

This is going to sound weird but...

I collect rosaries. I also like to have them made, and I've got ones with skulls, pentas, Goddess/Fertility figurines, and old school Catholic style ones with gnarly crucifixes. That's my favorite thing to collect.

I also like to collect Bibles. I have around ten, I think.

I like to collect stones. My favorite are Tiger's Eye, Amethyst, and Quartz.

I also collect figurines. I like angels, fairies, mythological God/esses, and the like.

Oh, and there's a store near me that sells handmade wares from Nigeria. I like to buy wooden bowls and stuff from them.

I think that's it.

As a kid, I used to collect Star Wars figures and vehicles. A bit of an embarassment to me now and I really should unload 'em. Even if they're not in mint condition, it might well be time to let someone else enjoy them. Just have to sort 'em and figure out reasonable prices for the damn things.

My main thing at the moment's books: I have far too many D&D manuals and splatbooks, for a start. I'm not too concerned about the current edition; I've got a crapload of those already and hardly use any of 'em (shame!) but I can't get enough of the 1st edition AD&D books. Can't beat those ancient modules.

Mind you, most of my book funds go on programming manuals now, in the (probably) vain hope that I'll get round to reading 'em all and actually learning stuff.

I mostly collect books and CDs. I'm starting a DVD collection (I only have about five at the moment) since I've finally sold my old videos - my ex has my video player so I don't need them anymore!

I'd love to have an enormous boot collection as I'm kind of obsessive over boots. The other day I was ogling a pair of boots on a website when my boyfriend looked over my shoulder and said "hey, they're nice! I might get them!" I was like "nope; they're mine!" He asked where I was going to get the £100 for them and I just shrieked "I don't care! They're MY imaginary boots and you can't have them! So there."

I'm such a saddo! *grin*
