Dancing.

Ok, so. The whole concpet of dancing has always been rather confusing for me. And I imagine a lot of you might go to clubs and whatnot, so, I ask you all: How do you dance? Do you have a personal style, or? I ask out of curiousity but also because I'm clueless about how.. especially when it comes to ebm and the like.

My style of dance is popular amongst nerds...its called the stand...

It's where you stand off to the wall and hope and prey for someone to dance with you.
hahahaha just kidding...I don't really dance at all.

Well, I'm a bit of a dancer: 9 years of tap dancing, 8 years of jazz, 4 years of contemperary and 2 years of ballet with a destinction for grade 1 exam.
The key is not to think about other people. When you're out on the stage infront of a couple of hundred people in a skimpy costume, the last thing you want is to notice someone you know in the front row. So just forget about your audience, or anyone who might be judging you. I hate judges. No body likes a judge.
Have fun and do what comes naturally. No point trying to breakdance in the middle of the dancefloor if you know you can't. Turn on some music in your bedroom and shake your toosh. 'Tis grand fun Get some basic moves down, and maybe ask your friends if they know any. And always be confident. I personally do interprative bubble dances on the bench in the middle of the courtyard...

Yes, a certain level of psychoitcness is involved

Muahahaha, I freakin' LOVE dancing. As disorder said, you just have to forget there's anyone around. The way I started gaining confidence with movement was just to lock my door, turn my music waaaay up, and lose myself in the beat. Also learning a few basic moves is a good idea - just taking one belly dance class boosted my confidence tremendously. Once you have the confidence, the rest will come naturally.

(Argh, I don't think that made much sense. Forgive me, I am in need of sleep...)

I danced 5 years of tap, 7 of jazz, and 3 of ballet. I dance with someone on slow songs. That's easy. But when it comes to faster music I just spaz out sometimes, (you should go to YouTube when I get a video of me on there dancing.) And when it comes to dancing then well I kinda just go with the music's beat. I dunno. Just let the music take over.

All good advise and a few belly dancing lessons sounds fun and a good way to learn how to dance to your own style. I personally though, have tried to dance bymyself even in my room with the music up and nobody home, and i still can't dance! I have no clue what to do! And as for just shaking you toosh, well, you need to do something with your arms and legs without looking like you're freak dancing with or without the person.

I like to dance sometimes... I just have to be in the mood. When I dance, It's usually because I'm wasted or I'm at a party.. or both. My only problem is that I can't dance to the music I like. I dance to hip hop music, but I'm not the biggest hip hop fan.

I never took any dancing lessons ( it's been in my, and my mom's, "plans for the distant future" list for some 4 years).

But that doesn't stop me from jumping out there and doing my thing. I don't even give a fuck about how it looks...well, at least while I am at it. And then I just hide at home for a week. Best solution.

I try to be completely natural and move the way I feel the music...express whatever the hell -I- want. I think it is best not to even think about the "moves"....it's best not to think at all, infact.

so there, that is my wonderful suggestion...and I suggest not to use for your own safety.

I can dance anything electronic, R&B, Disco, and Rock & Roll.
Unfortunately, down here in Juarez, they don't dance those that much (except for electronic music)
What they dance over here is Cumbia, "Rancheras", and Reggaetton. Except for Cumbia, I know nothing and am certainly not willing to learn.

I've done a lot of dancing lessons in various styles. However, I'm sorry to say that when I'm in a club it all goes out the window. I shut my eyes and just sort of move in my own space (works best when the dance floor isn't too crowded. Otherwise I have to half-shut my eyes and move in my own space.)

I feel that when dancing for fun the best thing to do is lose inhibitions and just go for it. Pending restrictions caused by corsets, platforms, very high heels, very tight skirts etc.

Having said all this I do try and avoid the 'hit by lightning' dance style that seems to be very popular with a certain type of Australian man - to whit: flinging oneself bodily from one end of the floor to another, accompanied by uncontrolled limb movements of the 'electrocution' variety, a la Midnight Oil. That is just dangerous, and after one bad night when a friend of mine ended up with a black eye thanks to this particular dance style I swore an oath that one day, I would track down that b*gger from Midnight Oil and give him what for...

Thanks for the replies, everyone.. I understand that dancing should just be instinctive and natural regardless of who's around, and that I can do, it's just confusing when it comes to other types of music. Electronic/industrial (aside from stomping) and the like. Now, when it comes to more old-world sounding, more tribal-like music, it's all much more effortless even if I do look like a belly dancer having a seizure.

If I could afford belly dancing lessons, though, I would definitely take them. I've wanted to since I was 6 years old.

I'm no dancer but I love to dance to a good old cheesy pop song or something I like. I went to a party a few months ago & shocked everyone with my macarena. But normally I just gyrate my hips or whatever feels right

When I dance, I probably look like a freakish mix between a ballet dancer, a latino dancer (have been doing mambo/ salsa for years) and a maniac. *laughs* It's still fun, though, and as long as no one starts pointing, I'm happy

Of the most distinctly Goth styles, should this be your particular aim, you could attempt the following-
-standing stil but moving head/shoulders/arms in ethereal patterns. Good for tall boots or too-tight corsets.
-the two-step - two forward/two back, two left/two right, in approximation to the music. Staring at the floor or making dramatic gestures with long coat and arms can help. It's my usual, since I'm not good at dancing. I just shuffle vaguely with the music.
-stomping- good for anything erratic or fast paced, you just throw your body around and stomp the feet as you will. Even if it's not in time to the music. It makes you look like you're having a fit, but it's damn popular with the local elder goths once they get a few cider down. Also looks good with glowsticks due to rapid arm movement.
With these ones you may look silly... but don't worry, so does everyone else.

My dancing is a mix of sway-y goth, cyber crap, and just whatever the hell I feel like doing. Consequently, I look like an ass when I dance.
