Emo problem

The thing is, it's hard to filter out some wannabe goths because they're too emo to begin with. I have a dark community that's been labelled by TV shows as "The Gothic Myspace", but the whole thing gets a lot of hatin' because of the so called Emo phenomenon. Some would even ridicule it as "Myspace for People Who Cut Themselves". Since when did Emo become gothic anyways?
I just yearn for a time when Goth will only be about the Music, and nothing more. Let's stop adding more stereotypes to it and stick to the music because it's how it got started.

So, guys, I'm lookin' for true goths to join http://www.mygothicheart.com

That's it and keep rocking on the dark side!

But it is mostly about the music. You yourself know that someone is not only goth because he wears black.
And a great mind doesn't make one a goth, it makes one a genius. All goths are smart, not all smarts are goth.

Yet, Music?
I just saw the Top Ten Rated in this site and I only see MArilyn Manson, Korn, HIM, Slipknot, Good Charlotte and Taking Back Sunday *gasp!*
Not one fucking mention of Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, not even Christian Death!!
So, Aborted Life, don't come here talking about how goth your people are and how you wish Goth was about music when no one there knows anything about goth music.

dude i got hundreds of dark cds and i've interviewed nearly 50 dark bands. i owned the site Goth in Asia which was added to Mick Mercer's 21st Century Goth book, he even mentioned it in a Meltdown interview that it was his fave site. it was running on a free server.

i'm connected with Subkulture productions in Manila, New York and SF.

I'm not talking about you not knowing about gothic music, I guessed that much. I'm saying don't rant about your site being called emo when the site's "favorites" are this ignorant.

now it's been stated in the news that he was part of the Gothic subculture. so i was right when i said for true goths to keep it in a musical sense, rather than adding more stereotypes to it. now they're blaming us all over again.

i could care less about this, but it's getting real annoying. the real goths get blamed and punished for the clueless actions of some stupid kids.

It's annoying, but you can let off some steam in this site. Just introduce yourself at some point in the near future in the Intro section.

We have an easy solution to it.... We say that it's 'natural garden' or a 'wildflower garden' and so we don't have to cut it or anything.

XDDD This emo goth thing it`s starting to annoy me. =P
Goth it`s an older subculture. And emo isn`t. It`s just a new teenage trend.
It`s so stupid to talk about this...

But, Jilli it`s true, both are, however, born out from their respective music genres. And...that`s why emo it`s so lame. I mean...take a look at those lyrics...XD...

Well, to each his or her own i say. My difference of view doesn't give me the right to judge.

Although i will admit that lyrics about smashing your own face in with a sledge hammer is quite peculiar even for dark music - although i have certainly had the urge at times, lol

This made me laugh.

So, instead of guiding them "Down the path of gothdom", or showing them what could be their beginning into a new culture, or simply accept that their different, and graciously explore the ideas of a seperate culture from oght, we have to, in your words, "filter out" them.

So... Instead of helping them out, or giving them some sort of guide down the right path... You just... Fliter them out? You, yourself have said they want to be goths... So why not help them? If this culture is so exclusive, you'd go out to stop people from becoming part of it, simply because they dont meet your ideals/standards, then I don't see why anyone would want to be apart of it. If it's based around individualism, yet by your demonstration, is the anti-thesis of it, it doesn't make sense.

Nice.

Quote:

Yeah, I mean, instead of having this nice little culture of like minded people, we're gonna keep it exclusively to the music, and hope we meet like minded people, who listen to said music.

Quote:
All goths are smart, not all smarts are goth.
This bugs me, because it's completely arbitrary. Since there is no set standard, for what Goth is in it's entirety, (Yes, I know there is that little "Goth with a Sledgehammer dealie. Not everyone agrees with it) to argue there are no stupid Goths, just seems like a cheap way to cover your butt.

"Some kid shot up the school. He wore victorian era clothes, and listend to Dead Can Dance. He can't be goth!" and "Some kid wrote an excellent piece of poetry! He wears victorian era clothes, and listens to Dead Can Dance. He could be goth!" See what I'm getting at here? And I know I'm being really nit picky, and somewhat aggressive, but that statement, just rubs me the wrong way. Nothing against you personally. It's just the audacity of that statement...

Quote:
i could care less about this, but it's getting real annoying. the real goths get blamed and punished for the clueless actions of some stupid kids.
Yeah, I mean, who would have thought an entire culture, that revolves rather nicely around the morbid, to some degree (Yes, put away your flame throwers, I know Goth and the morbid are not joined at the hip, but you have to hand it, there are some connections when you look at the subculture as a whole, those in it, and the concept of morbid and death). And once again, it comes back to my above arguement. As soon as someone does something bad, it just appears to me like you cover your ass by saying, "Nope. Wasn't one of us."

Quote:
Goth it`s an older subculture. And emo isn`t.
Actually [Warning: Geek Alert]Emo as a music, started In the late 1980s, arguably with Rites of Spring. Goth, only started, about 5 years earlier. So, that's somewhat of a historical inaccuracy. If you want to argue that it's the five years that make a difference, then wait 'til 2011, when it will be roughly five years older, and it will be as old as the concept of Goth. (It's arguable that the concept of Goth existed before the 1970s, sure, and if you want to play that point, then just give the "Emo" subculture enough time to evolve, the same as goth has.)[/The Geek Has Spoken]

Quote:
I mean...take a look at those lyrics...XD...
Yeah, I mean who would have thought that emo would have any good lyrics. Oh. That's right. If you look around, they probably do have some good lyrics.

Quote:

Who said it had to be goth? They're their own culture, and the can probably look back at you pretty funny too.

I'm not trying to attack anyone here personally. It just seems really stupid, to be bagging on one culture, when your own, that you're supposedly apart of, supposedly supports individuality. You're either for weeding out another culture, or weeding out people who want to learn about your culture, or ridiculing their culture.

Indeed. I have no real issues with Emo kids but I tend to think of them as a new subculture. So - good on them. Perhaps they can't be easily recognised apart from goths without a trained eye but I fail to see why that is a problem.

I do agree that music has a helluva lot to do with goth, however. But... don't we have something else in common? Isn't this a literary site? It was actually the literature that led me to the music in the first place. That dark aesthetic and all...

Well, but has this happened? A Victorian kid listening to real gothic music shooting people in his school.
Maybe it has, but I don't know about him.
Up till now, high school shootings related to the gothic subculture always ends up with just a guy that wore a trenchcoat and looked menacing.
Is he a goth? I don't think so. Until I see a goth make such a voluntary stupidity, then I can believe all goths are not intellectual. But, as for now, intellect defines goth just as musical tastes and fashion style.
