Because I LIKE it

Why do people think that just because you look "different" (i.e. goth) it's because of some deeply rooted emotional issue or you want attention or you want to be a noncoformist. I dress a certain way because I LIKE too, it makes me happy.
Why don't people get it?

Well, the way you choose to dress has indeed a cause, and obviously an emotional.
But emotions do not equal bad feelings.
I understand where are you going with this and agree, I'm just a detailist. XD

Many people seem to just have that "witch-hunter" mentality, and just because you are different, i.e. "darker" than what is considered "normal", something has to be psychologically "wrong" with you.

It sucks, and a lot of it is social conditioning from things like religion and family environment, but it's just something you have to either ignore or eventually deal with...

Certain bus drivers treat me like shit when I go on wearing like my New Rocks and trenchcoat. There's one bus company where nearly all the drivers are fine, but all the other bus companies' drivers are assholes towards anyone who's under 60 and isn't a trendy or chav. Probably figure I'm gonna go sacrifice a gerbil up at the back or something.

But other than them, Paisley & Glasgow seem surprisingly tolerant of mosher and gothic types. I mean, if you went out looking like the Crow and passed a gang of chavs you'd probably get your face violently folded along the painted-on lines, but anyone dressed reasonably sensibly gets no bother.

My parents don't care how I dress as long as I'm not wearing anything offensive or particularly outrageous; they did let me (at my very strong request) get my hair cut really short and wear boys' trousers and t-shirts since the age of 5, after all.

I dress the way I do, BECAUSE I LIKE TO. My dad doesn't get that. He thinks it's because I'm depressed and because it's my way of standing out and I wouldn't comfortable in anything else NO MATTER WHAT. That's not true. I can be comfortable wearing other clothing, just not AS comfortable as the stuff I wear now. I like the way I dress, I have no plans on changing the way I dress anytime soon.

Yes, my dad thinks I'm depressed because of the way I dress too. He thinks that the album from The Berzerker is about death, massacre and other "over the limit" morbid because it's labeled Death Metal. I wanted to laugh my head off.........

My parents don't think I wear black because I'm depressed. Then again, I'm 30, and by now they know that being depressed is not me.

People don't understand things that are completely outside their normal little world. Just think of how you judge a Britney Spears fan. Because you don't understand it. Believe me, a girl I really like in every other way is a...britney fan...and she's 23. I don't understand it, and I force myself every time I see her to remember that she's a wonderful person in every other way... Everyone's the same, just with different tastes and interests. Like when you see some blond bimbo dressed slutty. Does she want male attention, or does she just like how it looks? People judge too quickly, and because goths aren't in most people's normal little world, we get a lot of questions/snarkiness our way. I think that's all it is. They want to understand but can't, and wanting attention or rebelling are within their scope of understanding.

Why don't people get it?
Stereotyping, my friend. We are victims of it, yet it will always happen. As was stated before, people will be people. They are driven by their senses and only see what's on the outside, which makes them assume a certain type or kind of people act a certain way, which in turn spreads around like wildfire, thus creating a stereotype.

i think too many of us use the "goth" look as an excuse. people don't like me because i dress different, people look at me funny because i like to be this way. people assume this and that about me because i choose to be different. i can't get a real job or i can't do important things because i choose to dress this way. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!

when in reality--not everybody--but some of these people--aren't truly liked because they are MEAN, or IGNORANT, or RUDE. some people walk around thinking they need to have that chip on their shoulder, just waiting for bad reactions to their appearence. then, when it appears, they have manifested the preconceived notion they THOUGHT was going to come out...

i am a manager at a world renowned hospital and the number 1 in the states for the past 14 years. to look at my dress and hair, you would think i worked at hot topic...not as a pharmacy manager! i have tattos and piercings, in visible places mind you, yet, despite the way i dress, i have made a career for myself by diligently proving i am the best person for the job. organization skills, treating others appropriately, making sure the job is done right the first time are ways to have other's see through your dress and to the fact that you are a responsible person.

I agree completely, Ashes. That has always been one of my pet peeves. I hated the kids in high school that would do stupid shit like carve "666" into their arms, wear short-sleeved shirts, and then get pissed at people for staring. I hated the ones in pants with millions of chains, who decided they were discriminated against because people turned their heads to see what was jingling.

It's a complex many people have, not just "goth kids". My dad's business partner, for instance, has this theory that all blue-collar workers hate him because he wears a Rolex, and that he's discriminated against because he drives a BMW.

XD that's funny.

I've never seen 666 carved into someone's arms but I have seen "whore" and other things.
My ex carved whore into her inner thigh because her dad yelled at her...and on 6/6/06 she carved "father satan" into her arm.

Oh god I can't believe I went out with her....

She's an extreme babybat, one that thinks slipknot is gothic...and so is cutting yourself.

im going to stop before this becomes a rant.

so being a cutter is fashionable now?
what is becoming of society??
i guess all the advertisement from 60 minutes and intervention type A&E shows brings the reality out for parents to watch out for depressive behaviors, but also gives ideas to kids on how to get attention...

when i was 20 years younger and did that on occasion, it was not because i was purposely angry at daddy and wanted to piss him off....

'Course it's fashionable. I remember 7th grade as being when it first became trendy... My spooky little friends watched the Blair Witch Project and decided they all needed Blair Witch scars on their forearms. Then my friend Mariah took it a step further and wrote "I <3 Eric" (only with a real heart shape, not a greater than three), and suddenly it was totally cool!

Didn't kids do their own tattoos when you were younger? I mean, you and I know that's stupid, since it rarely turns out how you want it... But this is essentially the same thing. For my stupid little friends, it was about scars, not pain.

nah, we didn't do the homemade tatoo route...but real ones were cool. my b/f when i was 16 (ugh...we are talking circa 1987 here--mind you...) had a tatoo of the guns and roses cross with skulls on it on his chest. he was younger than me...

i was the first person in my school to get booted to the psych ward for acting out of line, being depressed, cutting, blah blah blah...once i got there i was surprised to see kids much more f'ed up than me. maybe even relieved. my version of cutting was slicing open my arm for some unknown reason, not cutting pretty designs and names, etc. i still don't know why i did it, but my mother says i was catatonic for days after until they took me to the hospital.

if i ever found out my child was cutting, i would probably check myself in along with her...i know from experience it is not chic, or cool, certainly not something you do for attention...

is that considered a goth thing to do? i would never relate cutting and goth...but then again...

i am old...

Cutting is horrible, and no where near cool nor fashionable. Most of the time it's just for attention or relieving stress/anxieties. But whatever, it's not just a Goth thing to do. The preppies do it too. But whatever.

Preppies also puke up everything they eat...so i wouldnt use them as a guage for anything...

the problem with society is that the exposure that mainstreamers get to different sub-cultures is a bit retarded. Its mainly about ignorance. which is sad. if you grew up thinking that things were a specific way, you'd believe it too. Pop culture determins how people see certain things....BLAME THE MEDIA!

Mmmmm poptarts.....
After a while, certain things become clear about the razorgoth lot. The under 17s cut, the over 17s don't. There's a border line from 16-18 usually. Those who cut after that are the ones that really need help.
Those who don't cut at all are those with half a brain or more.

I'm going to have to disagree with you, love... There are people who cut who are highly intelligent but in such emotional anguish that they feel compelled to externalize their pain. If they cut and they're smart, they find ways to hide it, usually, although it's easy to get carried away.
