Mallgoth Bands

So we hear the word 'mallgoth' bandied about quite a bit around here, most often in reference to music. But what exactly is does that refer to? How many 'mallgoth' bands are there, and what are they? This is a thread to collect the various band names that are without a doubt relegated to the mallgoth category. These are the bands who are named most often by kids who claim to be goths, but really don't have a clue what they're talking about. These bands are not goth bands. Some are metal bands, some are nu-metal, some are shock rock and some are... who knows what. But almost all of them can be seen in big letters on t-shirts at Hot Topic.

To start off with, the number one biggest mallgoth band of all time:

Marilyn Manson

Here's a few more to get started:
Slipknot
Kittie
Coal Chamber
Korn
Twiztid
HIM

Go on, name some more... let's see how many you can think of.

Insane Clown Posse
All That Remains
Trivium (My opinion)
Avenged Sevenfold
Atreyu
Cradle of Filth
Disturbed
Evanescence
Rammstein

Now, I have a question. What exactly does this mean? I mean, okay, so we think these are bands that "mallgoths" listen to. But what else does that say?

In their defense, Kittie has at least one good song :x

My Chemical Romance (Yes, it's true for both mallgoths and "emos")
Drowning Pool
Mudvayne
System of a Down
Seether
Hinder

Splintered: It says we are generalizing. However, mallgoths are a generalized people. They live by stereotypes.

Aiden litterally makes me wonder when my ears will start bleeding, they are that bad.

ICP... their lyrics amuse me but I've never actually heard them sing their songs. My friend, Mort, loves sing their songs and it kept me from getting murderous in Phys. Ed, laughter cures damn near anything in my case.

AFI, is my addition.

It says that and no more, really.

I think every one of us knows at least one 'mallgoth' band who has at least one good song.* But we're not really judging at this point, just gathering.

I'd classify the Misfits (the ORIGINAL Misfits at least) as 'death punk', which has considerable crossover with death rock, hence: a close cousin.

Bella Morte are an example of a band who tread that line very well: they do both the goth/death rock and the death punk thing. They are also a good example of a band that is promoted and sold in Hot Topic, but are the real deal and not 'mallgoth'. At least so far.

I read the name Bella Morte and I wanted to scream "Oh God! Not them! They're talented!"
Anyway, I cannot think of many other mallgoth bands (is Good Charlotte still "in"?) but there seems to be an obsession with Johnny Cash in Hot Topic. Oh, and I don't know how popular he is in Hot Topic, but I would have to say Skinny Puppy also fits into the mallgoth music.

And I also like some of Manson's stuff. Just because he has crappy followers doesn't mean all of his music is bad >_> It's not all good, obviously, but he does produce some decent stuff.

I need to stop defending these bands xD

Cicero loves AFI.
I like Rammstein and Dimmu Borgir, love Manson's album Mechanical Animals, and will argue that Korn is an amazing band.

Meh, I like Evanescence. But I always defend them too much.

Anyways, that one hit wonder 'The Rasmus' had quite a mallgoth following.

I love older AFI, haha. Their new album, December Underground, is complete fail.

I used to like KoRn. I can still tolerate their older stuff, but again, their new stuff is terrible.

Bella Morte is a good band, but I think they do have a secret wish to be the next AFI or whatever. I hope they don't trade their integrity for the big-time.

I would have to heartily disagree with that last one. Skinny Puppy have been around respected for far too long to ever be able to ever fall into the mallgoth category. It would be like calling Siouxsie or Bauhaus 'mallgoth' because they sell shirts with their logos at Hot Topic. Same with Johnny Cash. Just doesn't compute.

Remember that I'm not equating mallgoth bands with bad talent.
Skinny Puppy just happens to be extremely popular among mallgoths.

That is true but he only said that the misfits were goth because myspace music said so. XD

I'm confuzzled here, Johnny Cash? Like June Carter, Johnny Cash? Folsom Prison, Johnny Cash?

If it is so, what the bloody hell is that? How does that correlate? That is a serious question, I'm confused.

System of a Down is MallGoth? Wow. I'm continually amazed at how myself and goth's are not, and will never be on the same page.

Man, I KNEW as soon as I opened this thread that I'd see someone list AFI as a mallgoth band.

At least you aren't classifying it as emo, which = wrong. And mallgoth and mainstream as they may have become, I'll defend to the death their ability to create good music.

I even support older AFI more than the newer (I prefer Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes to Decemberunderground), but I still think the musical creation is good, although a lot more mellow than they've used to be. However, in their defense, all good bands do a bit of maturing musically. Davey's over 30 now...people appreciate angry young musicians, not angry old men. (This is why Green Day is god-awful now) He changed and still maintained what he wanted to write, and like it or not, it's respectable.

I disagree. AFI is a guilty pleasure of mine, but I saw them back when Davey had devilocks, so I gotta back him.

Yeah, I too am SICK of the Misfits being classified as Goth. Even Revolver-fucking magazine classifies them as that. They started out as an alternative punk band, ok? Just the fact that they have horror themes doesn't make them goth. Their songs aren't supposed to be taken seriously anyway!!!

Miss Murder?
I haven't listened to all the songs on their new album, and I don't really care to because they produced this album to appeal to the masses more than any previous album. Their style has changed completely to me, I didn't even recognize them at first. I was terribly disgusted.

And, Mir, I have seen a LOT of mallgoths prance around in SoaD shirts. It's a terrible sight.

Is it sad to say I happen to like a little bit more than 1/2 of these bands we've mentioned???

Oh, we forgot Hawthorne Heights and Linkin Park.

I highly disagree that Marilyn Manson is the biggest 'mallgoth' band around. I mean, go into your local Hot Topic... how much Marilyn Manson merchandise do you see? The most I've seen is two t shirts and a few albums. Maybe Marilyn Manson was the biggest 'mallgoth' band around a number of years ago... but it seems to me that bands such as My Chemical Romance, Slipknot, and AFI are at their peak popularity at the moment.

Or maybe I don't really understand the term 'mallgoth'.
