Ah yeah, the Division...
Can't wait for "Control" to be released. Still can't find a definite release date anywhere, though...

Joy Division have an album called Substance and so does New Order. Funny that. I knew about the New Order album but.... hey I'm just slow to catch on. I wonder why they named them the same?

I just made a guy buy 'Unknown Pleasures' today. It's hard to go wrong with Joy Division. In Camera and Section 25 are also really good if you like that type of sound.

I love Joy Division. I mean, honestly, they're amongest the first bands to be GOTH (though apparently their considered 'post-punk') they're a true gothic rock band. Btw, wasn't their a rumour that Andrew Eldritch and SOM tried to copy their style? Because it's very different.

I absolutely love Joy Division. It's too bad that Ian Curtis ended his life the way he did. Still, I believe if he had lived through his depression at that time the style of Joy Division would probably have still delved into something kind of like what New Order became later... less claustrophobic, easier on emotions, not so dependant on the solitude factor, etc.
BTW, on the February edition of MOJO mag there has been a 16 page feature on Ian Curtis and Joy Division... I actually paid $10 for the magazine, it's amazing stuff.

I think Joy Division IS a post-punk band. It's not only style or certain themes that made Goth be, but also the timing, and Goth as it is only came to be after Bauhaus and some later Siouxsie and the Banshees. But still I do agree that if Ian Curtis had survived the next 10 years he probably would have been closer to the Goth movement of the 80s... even if he would probably not have been a Goth himself.

I love Joy Division to pieces. They also had gorgeous album covers, especially Closer.
...I don't think they sound like SOM at all.

They're pretty good. I like New Order better, though.

Isn't Substance a collection of Joy Divison singles? I believe Unknown Pleasures and Closer are the only studio albums.
She Wants Revenge has a very strong Joy Division sound.

I love Joy Division, but my boyfriend...he's CRAZY about them. Completely insane over them. He has a huge crush on Ian Curtis, which is a shame considering...well, the tragedy.

Substance for both Joy Division and New Order are singles collections.
She Wants Revenge is real good, and I'd also recommend Editors and Interpol as well. They all have that "post-punk" minimalistic feel to them, and have been compared to Joy Division.
If you're just getting into Joy Division, it's worth picking up the Heart and Soul boxed set. It contains all of their studio recordings, alternate takes, and some live tracks. You could purchase the five CD's they have released, but the boxed set contains all that and more for around the same price.

Despite the fact that I rarely listen to them, Joy Division has always been a huge influence in my songwriting. Maybe their songs are so memorable they don't need to be heard over and over?

I actually have a co-worker who has heard Love Will Tear Us Apart once years ago, and he still remembers it as well as some who have heard other songs a hundred times. They're certainly a haunting band that doesn't leave the memory without force.
