What brings you true happiness?
Excuse my placing this thread here. I figured being happy and political don't exactly go hand in hand so....
What brings you true happiness? What is true happiness? Or what deffers you from being happy?
This is a question I often ask myself. Sure, we are all supposedly moping in our misery over how crap the world is and how alienated we feel towards society etc etc... but we're all social animals and the need to communicate and be happy with others is relatively instinctive. Thus, please tell me what you think makes people happy in this world, and more importantly what you think makes you happy.
Myself: I feel that nothing makes me happier than contrasts in life make me happy. Family time, alone time, friends time, work time, if I was to have one of those all the time I would feel miserably bland. I crave contrasts and different senario's to occur every day. I also feel that money does nothing but make me miserable. The mere thought or owrry just takes away the spark out of my day. I would go deeper into this but the library I am currently typing this up at is closing down.
Please post what you believe makes you happy or prevents you from being happy in life. Or agrue. Either way, I am greatly interested in this subject.

I've said it before I'll say it again the meaning of life is to live for somone else. That is why my love brings me true happiness when she is happy.

Like Renatus said, love is equal to happiness. Even in torment and death, a life spent in love is a sweeter solace than life lived for onesself.

There are a few things that make me happy, such as spending time by myself, spending time with my family, with my pets, playing video games and relaxing. But as it was previously said, true happiness only comes from living for someone else.

Being in nature makes me unbelieveably happy. The smell of the wet earth and leaf mould, of moss and undergrowth after it's been raining is like nothing on earth.
Also, going to concerts and being at the front center barrier honestly makes me really happy. You see all and hear all, there is no-one's sweaty back in your face, and band members actually notice you are there. I love it when they come down to the crowd and interract , it shows that they are not afraid to touch and mingle with the people who buy their music and allow them to continue being successful. Plus the atmosphere and tension just as the lights go down and the various band members walk on stage...truly thriling.
Animals make me very happy. I adore wildlife ( and my pets of course ) and will sit in the garden for hours with sparrows and starlings flying around me. I also have singing matches with the local blackbird, I'm getting quite good now.

Just being with friends usually keeps me pretty occupied. Not happy, but occupied.
Conquering new challenges makes me happiest. Super hard riddle no one can solve? I'd love to take a crack at it. Trying to figure out how that damned router works? Give me a few hours. Gun keeps on busting up? Let me have a look, etc.
I like fixing, changing, and modifying things. That's what makes me the happiest.
That, and my girlfriend. But I'd prefer not to write a 6,000 word treatise on why.

Love. New love. Passionate love. Shelter-from-the-storm love.
Friendship. Family.
What keeps me from happiness is mean nasty spiteful petty people that I wish I didn't have to associate with. As much as I've learned not to let them get to me, I wish I could surround myself with worthwhile people.

For me, I imagine love will bring me happiness, as I feel warm inside when I can almost sense the camaraderie in the air; but as I've never experienced real romantic love, I feel a dreary sort of happiness at daydreaming about it.
I also feel...rejuvenated upon hearing the rain outside my window, walking from an urban setting into Nature, and listening to my favorite music, even if a song is depressing. I don't know about you, but the first two usually make a situation seem more pleasant, but make me feel "gray" at the same time.
Perhaps I'm a leech, but I feel the greatest happiness knowing others around me are happy, especially if it's because of something I've done. This would reinforce the idea that joy is social. Although I'm a loner by nature and often feel the most comfortable by myself, I'm not sure how I'd feel if there were no people to avoid.

True happiness? Well right off the bat I would have to say:
1) My grandson's laugh and smile. He is a little over two months old.
2) My loving blue eyed blonde wifey honey bunny!
3) My Son and Daughter.
4) My Father, Mother, Sister and her kids (My nieces and nephew).
5) My local Friends.
6) My VIRTUAL FRIENDS ON GOTHIC DOT NET!!!
7) My God.
Then thinking about it a little more: Microscopes, telescopes, binoculars, lasers, reading and writing Gothic Romance fiction, reading science fiction, physics, optics, math, biology, astronomy and MAD magazine, chihuahuas, cats (all kinds), bats, tarantulas, MUSIC, prime rib and sauteed mushrooms, flan and Columbian coffee, strawberry shortcake with TONS of whipped cream, croissants with marmalade, Danny Phantom and Sam Manson, Monty Python, broiled salmon, jumbo shrimp cocktail, movies, Halloween, cucumbers and avocados, Baskin Robbins, Gibson and Fender guitars, pianos, BOOKS, CLOTHES (including boots and shoes), massages and MORE!

Besides the many other awesomely unexpected things you mentioned, I just felt like shouting "DANNY PHANTOM!" to the online masses. Yes.
Heh, another fan. Who'da thought?

Being with nature, either in the ocean or on land. Being in the presence of whales, bears, lions or anything else breathtaking (in the wild, not in a zoo). Being with orangutans or monkeys. Having them reach out and hold my hand. Being with my cats. Being with my family. Playing music. Creating something beautiful. And shopping. Definitely shopping.
Funnily enough living for someone else has only ever made my life miserable.

A book, a journal, a pencil, my i-pod, rain, my poetry, adrian, basenjis, cats, electric blankets, fire, blasting my music in an empty house and singing knowing that no one can hear me, volunteering with the babys at the nursery, tomatoes, darkness.

Dancing for myself and then unexpectedly getting a compliment for it makes me incredibly...not happy exactly...but content. Two years ago, I did a contempary/modern dance to a song by Emma Shappling for the school talent show. A lot of the students just looked at me a little oddly after that but quite a few teachers told me it was "unexpected" and "very beautiful" which made me go up all happy. It's nice to know that the hard work and dedication I've put into doing something I love has paid off and that others appreciate the beauty of a soul dance.
Another thing that again, doesn't make me feel happy per se but rather, soulful, is the rain. I love all aspects of it. The smell of the earth, the smell of the rain itself, the feeling of it as it rolls down my face, the look of the world after and during it, the sound it makes.
I also can't honestly say that my family doesn't make me happy. I love just sitting in my parents' bed and reading with a fire in the chimney. It's so homely, so pleasant to not have to worry about it.
Also, as cheesy as it may sound, writing and reading posts on this site makes me happy. I've been through a lot this year and it's been nice to know that there are people out there who might never meet me, never know me in person but who accept me anyways, for who I am, not for what I look or act like. Because yes, I have many masks and my caring self vs. my sarcastic and cynical self vs. my individualistic self vs. my darker self vs. so many other facets of me are rarely accepted and rarely come together. Earlier on this year, my English teacher said something to my parents and I which deeply affected me. It uses my real name which I'm just going to star out. "******* is still striving to find herself. However, you must remember not to define yourself as a contradiction to others but rather as a whole and well-rounded individual who is unique."
Getting e-mail also makes me happy. Because then I feel like "Ooooh! Someone cared enough to take the time to write me an e-mail! Yay!" Starting in December, I began communicating through e-mail with a friend of mine who is three years older than me. He's helped me through some tough spots, we've argued over everything from abortion to movies, we've flirted and I've helped him too. IT may not sound like much, but believe me, getting an e-mail from someone you deeply care about and knowing that they've taken time out of their busy schedule to write to you makes you feel very happy.

I would have to say my family and my boyfriend bring my true happiness. My family is funny and weird and they all make me laugh. Plus they love me and care for me unconditionally no matter what.
My boyfriend makes me happy just because I love him and he gives me that feeling of being happy. I love him and he loves me. It makes me feel happy to know that.

I think having someone who loves me the most would make me truly happy. But since I’ve never had anyone who really loved me like that, its more of a dreamy fantasy.
I would have to say I am happiest right before I go on stage to dance and during a show when I’m on stage dancing. I really feel good when I perform.
I fell absolutely wonderful when I’m learning something new or reading a book.I love to learn things…

Art.
I couldn't live without art. Love has only given me reasons to dislike it.

I am happiest when I know something wonderful is about to happen. As weird as it may sound, I am more excited about something that will happen in the near future than about the thing actually happening. Maybe because at that moment there's too much going on and I don't have enough time to sit back and enjoy.
Oh well, I feed on my dreams. Not good, but I can't help it.

Living for one's SELF makes me happy. Not that I'm a selfish person, but I'm happy when I see that others find something that makes them happy. The only time I'm truly NOT happy is when people attactch their reason for being happy on me.
I'm happy with friends. I don't really have a lot to do with my family. But I'm happy to see them every now and then.
Living for someone else... no thanks. Been there and done that. It's less than stellar. To each their own though. ^__^
What didn't make me happy was going to the new goth club in town and this guy showed up because he was hoping to see me. He didn't show up just to be in the atmosphere and the freedom of expression. He showed up to see me. Which was kinda creepy in its own right. Poor guy. Do what thou wilt I suppose...
