DIY'ing for beginners

Oi oi.

From my understanding, back in the days before Hot Topic and Blue Banana and other 'dark stores' it was quite the norm to make and mend your own clothing.

This is sadly a tradition in decline. It's much for average John Smith's like me to pop online and buy a crate-load of cheap tat with 'gothic' stapled to the price tag.

Anyway. I'd quite like to have a crack a making my own gothic clothing. Unfortunately I have a rare condition known as 'stupid hands' where even the most simple of tasks become impossible because of appauling hand-eye co-ordination.

So I thought it would be nice to start with something easy? And work my way up until I can make and mend my own clothing.

I'm planning on going to Exeter soon, for some essential clothing, plain black shirts, black trousers that arn't demin or are very -very- baggy.
And I thought I would swing by the Real McCoy (the one stop shop for all your clothing needs) and buy a cheap leather jacket there.

Dirt cheap, 10 quid and you get the buscuit crumbs in the pockets thrown in for free.

I thought a leather jacket would be rather a fun project, and it sounded quite simple.. Just... Glueing things to it?

So if anyone can point me in the direction of a 'n00b friendly' goth DIY guide, I would be eternally grateful.

Over and out.

For links check out this thread: https://www.gothic.net/boards/showthread.php?t=4456

What you should start with is up to you, and depends on what your personal style is.

If you're buying plain black shirts you could start with painting stuff on them. You can freehand writing or a band logo, or have a go at stencilling them for something a little neater. All you need are fabric paints or bleach and a brush. Something I've seen that looked pretty good was a black t-shirt that had literally just been sprayed and splattered with bleach.

For a leather jacket, you could paint it - use acrylic paint and the tiniest brush you can find (better safe than sorry).

Oooh, I dunno about that, as I say 'stupid hands'. *Shakes hands*

It's an idea though, and it certinally sounds alot easier then trying to stick pointy things on it.
I think I'll go with the DIY black shirt idea though, I fancy making a Switchblade Symphony shirt.
Huzzah!

Is it hard to stick spiky things to leather jackets? :-S

Get a bedazzler or find flat back spikey things and glue them on with E6000.
