Gerard Way Says Emo Is A Pile Of Shit

My Chemical Romance have hit out at the genre of emo calling it “a pile of shit.”

Frontman Gerard Way is clearly irate with media outlets bracketing his band with the tag and decided to hit out.

Way ranted: “Basically, it's never been accurate to describe us. Emo bands were being booked while we were touring with Christian metal bands because no one would book us on tours.

“I think emo is fucking garbage, it's bullshit. I think there's bands that unfortunately we get lumped in with that are considered emo and by default that starts to make us emo.”

He finished to student website The Maine Campus: “All I can say is anyone actually listening to the records put the records next to each other and listen to them and there's actually no similarities. I think emo's a pile of shit.”

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/..._of_sh-t.html\
This is the saddest thing I've read in my life. Apparantly, a band who is part of the pile of shit is claiming that it is indeed a pile of shit.

I like MCR too. Their music is quite good, and I wouldn't say they're "Emo".

Hm....I used to really enjoy them.

Then I stopped listening to them, because of what other people thought/said/did.

GOddamit.

That was totally an idiot move on my part.

I second that. I guess it's come to Gerard's senses that his band's music was labeled in a genre that he wasn't aimming for. I would like to know what the hell took him so long to figure that out.
I'm a little confused to what their music really supposed to be in, perhaps just punk or metal? I sure know it wasn't goth rock.

I'm not worried since I don't listen to them (even though I tried to), but to see that musicians should have been more direct with their fans beforehand.

Right now, I can imagine alot of emos are probably throwing their CDs and saying "Fuck you, Gerard!".

Who says it should be "supposed" to be anything? People that have views like that are ruining music. Music is artistic expression, and while it is helpful to describe it as "rock," or "goth," or "jazz," forcing it into those catagories or overanalyzing it just ruins it.
Just let music be what it is.

YES YES!!! THANK YOU!!! FINALY SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS
it hurts me inside =( Especially in my own band... we just write from the heart, what we feel, but I'm always worried about getting flamed jz because I don't know what genre we are =\

If MCR hates emo so much was their opening band for their black parade tour an emo band?

I remember that too. I was stunned what he said back then.

Here's a link to his comments on goth in the "Gothic associations"

I recall reading about that everytime he was doing an autograph session, he refused to sign any for goths too.

I guess Gerard wants to be like Andrew.

EMO is fine. This depressing, self pitying indie that you all call emo is shit. My chemical romance isn't emo. It's unreasonably whiney at times but it isn't emo. The only good emo band I know (well emo-punk) is Yellowcard.

His music is awful, so I don't see why he feels he can slam an entire genre. I wish My Chemical Romance would just go away. -_-

Dude, last time I checked Yellowcard was pop punk a la Blink 182. Emo was bands like Saves the Day, Sunny Day Real Estate, Fugazi, etc.

What the fuck is Andrew talking about? He sounds kinda like I or many other goths do. Pretty much sick of the "G" word.

I wonder how the news was broken to him...

"I'm sorry Gerard. You've missed the mark. Polls are showing that kids think your music is emo."

Gerard Way likely doesn't even really know what emo is, nor do most people these days. It's just a trendy adjective to throw around now.

Somehow I feel that this has more to do with him wanting to appeal to a younger audience, and very little to do with musical integrity? Maybe because he doesn't have any to begin with... :-D
